Pros

-Great community to work with, other interns were great, working with people of diverse backgrounds -helps with interpersonal and communication skills

Cons

-CEO works remotely and while they are a non-profit, all he seems to care about is money -underpays his program coordinator who is stuck doing the majority of the work -refuses to pay any compensation or reimbursements for any of the travel costs for interns and sometimes even teaching volunteers -have heard the CEO say racist and homophobic statements -After leaving the company, CEO attempted to put blame onto program coordinator for the mistakes he made with me

This review was flagged as a violation of GlassDoor policy. Unfortunately GLN had an intern for a very short period who was bi-polar and at one point made racist and homophobic statements to other colleagues, and then oddly accused those victims of being racist and homophobic. This person also tried to steal $549 from the organization to cover "transportation" and then accused the organization of not reimbursing volunteers, despite the fact that it reimburses thousands of dollars of legitimate expenses after reviewing receipts. When the organization took notice of this intern's behavior it took immediate action. Unfortunately it was a condition not-disclosed beforehand and not detected until the bizarre outburst. Since GLN has a zero tolerance policy for any form of discrimination, this person was dismissed immediately after having expressed zero remorse and zero intention to participate in GLN sensitivity training. This person was angry about losing the position and threatened retaliation, which we see here. GLN encourages readers to ignore this post and have compassion for the former intern who only acted out of an unfortunate medical condition, which does not reflect on the person or the organization itself.

Pros

This is a rare chance to build professional skills by taking initiative and "crafting your own experience". While there are goals and objectives, GLN is much more open to input from any individual who wants to contribute than you typically find in the working world. It's also unique in that it has a very global perspective that is humanizing for people from all backgrounds. Every language is valued, every culture is valued and every person is valued in a way that has more impact on you as you interact with and contribute to the community more. The executive leadership is open to interacting with everyone and is welcoming to people from all backgrounds and with all interests. The mission is yours to interpret and by being there, you will improve. Many companies and organizations focus on a limited range of cultural interests but GLN is respectful of and interested in everyone and every part of the world. This is both a professional platform and a community.

Cons

It's not really a con but there's a lot of work that goes into successfully running this program. A person needs to be prepared to recognize that and also to be flexible when circumstances change quickly. There are times when it is just necessary to pitch in and to be committed to quality. The more people collaborate, the more balance exists. At the same time, the goal is growth and now is a great time for it.
