Pros

• The clients and projects were great to work on and helped me become a well-rounded designer who can tackle anything from app to editorial to e-commerce at all scales • You have lots of control and say in your projects, no matter what career "level" you're at as there are many opportunities to travel for work and pitch to clients (if that's your thing) • Very socially fun if you participated in out of work activities as I'm still friends with several folks who are working or have worked here

Cons

• Very difficult to level up here, especially for women or BIPOC • Pay and benefits are not as competitive as other agencies of the same level in Vancouver or in the industry • High turnover rate because business decisions when it comes to hiring/trying to keep people seem to be reactive, full of bias and ego, and not thought through • When something difficult, unsavoury, or heavy happens at the agency, rather than taking responsibility or facing the truth, the onus, blame, and responsibility of problem-solving gets put on the employees to do most of the heavy lifting (low morale and crying during 1-on-1s was common)

Pros

Some of the clients are notable and the work of other people at the company. However, the leadership is absolutely horrible.

Cons

Leadership is a boys' club of condescending (majority white) men who couldn't care less about DEI initiatives. When Black Lives Matter protests erupted and DEI became a priority everywhere, Engine Digital did the bare minimum. They formed a performative DEI team stacked with people from marginalized backgrounds, but with zero leadership participation. The CEO himself embodies the problem. During a DEI meeting, he dismissively declared "we don't have sexism here" and that he "only hires adults." This is incredibly disrespectful considering the documented pay gap between genders and the complete lack of objective promotion criteria that favors men. While their public image on social media is to thank women performatively on International Women's day, year over year. I personally experienced discrimination in the form of microaggressions and even overt statements. To make matters worse, there's no functional HR department. When I confided to leadership about harassment I was facing, they shamelessly shared my confidential report with a coworker as an example. This is a staggering breach of trust. My work, and the work of my colleagues, was used for recognition at the Vancouver UX awards that the company bragged about on social media, yet the teams responsible received no recognition or reward internally. Bias is rampant throughout the organization, from hiring and promotions to who gets assigned to prestigious projects. The company profits are shared with those who've been there for years, while those actually doing the work are denied any opportunity. Juniors are given zero chance for growth, and "mentorship" means getting thrown into the deep end with difficult clients and unclear expectations. Those doing the work on the ground bear the brunt of the chaos. If you're looking for a company that values its employees and fosters a truly inclusive environment, avoid Engine Digital at all costs.

While this review contains factual inaccuracies, we appreciate that this is one person's experience, and their own perspective, and we trust that they have landed in an environment that is better suited to their specific needs and expectations. With that, all feedback we receive is of value, and we appreciate that in regards to DEI, everyone has a unique perspective as to the actions necessary and appropriate for a organization to live its values, ensuring an equal opportunity for growth across its entire team. DEI is a topic we have invested significant time exploring over the past several years – in ways that are both visible and behind the scenes – while always in service of ensuring we are bringing together the best team possible, while providing each of our team members with a positive career opportunity and experience. As we have done to date, we continue to make diversity, equity, and inclusion a part of how we operate and a consideration in the work we do for our clients.
