Good salary and stock options, but toxic management culture, you - Software Engineer III Walmart Global Tech Employee Review

Pros

- You always get salary on time - Stocks are vested quarterly - Everything you work on has massive scale

Cons

- Has the worst mix of Ex-Amazon and Ex-service based company Directors and Managers, where working with the management would look like running with headless chickens. - Profits and company's growth doesn't translate to good hikes. - Annual layoffs since 2023, every team has a quota to stack employees against each other and if you're in a team where everyone is a good performer, you're in bad luck because they have 10% quota to fill and will put you opportunity rating and eventually laid off by June, even when you've performed well they'll find the stupidest reason. Fear of layoff takes a toll on your mental health. Some teams have seen their top performers or the most knowledgeable ones laid off too. - Telugu cartel is real, US Telugu managers will fast track their own people for promotion while people working hard for years will be given some stupid reason. They'll even give them high visibility products to fast track it and snatch it away from the people who deserve it. - Really long working hours with expected overlap with US timings, but they expect you in office by 10 the next day. They ask you to take a break in the afternoon before US team logs in, it doesn't work for unmarried people with no kids.

Pros

WLB is pretty good, can’t complain about the pay either. Interesting work as well

Cons

Nothing specific to Walmart, cons apply to all companies like political stuff

Pros

Work-life balance is good in most teams. 9 to 5 is doable, but if you have partners working in India, then you might need to have meetings in earlier mornings and late evenings. Culture is good. In the sense that if most people in your team have families, then it's common that people leave work at 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. to pick up kids.(and work at home after that)

Cons

Moving very slow. Not very tech-driven. Business has a lot to say and huge power. Company is going through restructuring frequently. Almost feel like two to three reorgs every year. The new CPO Daniel D seems only good at hosting fireside events than driving real AI innovations. Engineering and Product feel working in silo for AI innovation. A lot of PMs feel not clear about their scopes under the ask that everyone should be a global PM covering US, international, and Sams club. No idea how you can have one PM cover three regions when you have three different sets of engineering team and business team, and the business conditions are so different. Leadership expects individuals to figure out for themselves. Engineering competency is a big concern, especially for AI-related work Not recommending joining now because of the layoffs, reorgs, and chaos.
