Pros

Verizon has good benefits - 401k, medical, dental - however the employee contribution cost has been increasing some over the last couple years. Opportunity to work with new technologies is good. People with diverse ethnic backgrounds almost guaranteed employment with company.

Cons

Too much churn from above mentioned re-org's, acquisitions and divestitures. (Alltel/Frontier). The fallout from the last three years of layoffs is that no one knows who to call or contact anymore for assistance since many people and/or groups are now gone or defunct. It is clear that upper management fear for their jobs and are deploying empire-builing tactics to save their jobs/function/groups. Definitely a dog-eat-dog environment where protecting and keeping a job can be a daily obsession. It is difficult to break away from the phobia and fear-mongering and try to ignore all the rumors floating around. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to concentrate and perform at your best. Just when it seems the storm is passed, something new comes up. Bad, bad, bad marks to the company for layoffs (RIF's they call them) just prior to the holidays - that is simply evil. At least let people look for a new job while the weather is good. Lastly - Verizon caters to the unions while the management employees suffer.

Pros

Compensation is competitive but you will work very hard for it. Culture is excellent and exhibited and practiced from the top down. Benefits are excellent and cost reasonable. 401k match and profit sharing. Lots of training and professional development opportunities. Can advance if you're willing to relocate.

Cons

Company is trying to transform into what it wants to be beyond a wireless carrier (cloud?, security?, telematics?, wholesaler?, etc) and is struggling with a vision, resources, and org structure to make it a reality. Several re-organizations over last few years so job security has frequently been a question. Often delayed response to competitors caused by management's concern that acting would result in not meeting Wall Street expectations. Not the "happiest" place to work because no result is ever good enough and successes aren't celebrated because the focus is always on the next weekly/monthly/quarterly goal.
