Pros

Flexible, interesting demand management technology, headquartered in Boulder

Cons

The culture is creating equity issues. Promotions are not given based on merits and accomplishments, but based on if the executives like you. Often, who the executives like is based on who they hired at the company they worked for prior to the acquisitions, and they seem heavily skewed towards giving preferential treatment to men--many less qualified men were promoted instead of more qualified women. And many aggressive, sexist men were promoted instead of more balanced, experienced, compassionate men. The men that buy into this culture are condescending, rude, and inappropriate. Women are not given the same opportunities, compensation, promotions as men at Uplight. It was terrible to see all the women leaving as a result of this. I do not think this company is going to stay afloat. Even though there are some good people trying to shift the culture, I think it's too late--it's too deeply entrenched.

Pros

-Mission-driven organization that attracts and retains super high-caliber people; I was at this company for 7.5 years in large part because of the quality of my coworkers and leaders. -Unique set of core competencies that have strong product/market fit, which is very important to be successful in sales. -Incredible priority on you as a whole human, not just you as an employee. This comes out in immense flexibility and family-first practices. If you are getting your work done, no one is going to mind when/where that work is getting done. -Very excited about the Octopus Energy transaction - I think this will be a huge plus for culture, focus, and mission, and I fully expect to see new leadership in line with Octopus' vision for Uplight. -Great opportunities for moving within functions and teams in the organization. Wonderful place to be early/mid in your career.

Cons

-You must be able to work and thrive in dynamic, shifting situations. If you're someone who wants very established processes and clear lines to work within, it's not going to be a good fit. If you get excited about the opportunity to take initiative and make a name for yourself, you'll do well.

Pros

The health insurance was fine. That's about it.

Cons

There's just no path forward here, honestly. You do the same work quarter after quarter and nobody talks about developing you or giving you new responsibilities or anything like that. I brought up wanting to learn more skills and basically got told "that's not really what we do here," which is a nice way of saying stagnation is the business model. Everyone I knew who was any good eventually left because they figured out — correctly — that staying would just be wasting years. The company seems perfectly content having people coast indefinitely, which sounds nice until you realize you're aging out of opportunities while contributing nothing new to yourself or anyone else. And honestly, the worst part is they seemed surprised when I quit, like they thought I'd just be cool perpetually treading water.
