Pros

Although this was a very challenging and toxic environment, it challenged me to reassess my personal values and my self-worth. I learned how to recognize red-flags, and I know what questions to ask of any future employer.

Cons

Terrible benefits. Health care is simply an unaffordable plan unless you are making an executive's salary. PTO is very strict (and simply does not apply to executives). The few times I took a day off I was asked to work (often disrupting plans). No work-life balance. Expect to work 12 hour days as an assistant here and to be on-call all hours of the day/night. Absolutely no respect for their employees. The executive team is all male and the majority of them are incredibly sexist. I was asked to do so much more than my job-description and I was not ever compensated for the extra work and time. This job was soul crushing and pushed me in to the most terrible anxiety and depression I have ever experienced. I was isolated from my family and friends. It was like being in an abusive relationship, I was consistently verbally and emotionally abused. There is a reason this company has a terrible reputation in the Raleigh, NC area. If you have children/a family to support please please please do not work here. If you are young, and want to take the risk– give it a shot. But if people rely on you for income and benefits I can not tell you how urgently you must not associate yourself with this company. They will make you lovely promises and never see them through.

Pros

You will be held, relentlessly, to a standard of excellence. I list this as a Pro, but many folks I've worked with (even here at Surprise HR) would consider it a Con - I do not fault anyone for having this belief, I just don't share it. It is refreshing to come to work every day and strive to be better than yesterday, knowing you won't be quite good enough to make tomorrow easy. For those of you reading this that have excelled in your past or current organization and reached a pinnacle you can appreciate the value of this quality in a workplace - no complacency, no room to get sloppy, and no feeling that your peers aren't working as hard as you. In line with the above are the people you get to work with. It is a rare individual who can succeed in the kind of environment we've built here. Most people would (or have) become frustrated at the constant pursuit of perfection - I am inspired by it. I liken it to working out - you'll never be fit enough to make tomorrow's workout easy, but it is the struggle that fuels your determination to find the next level. To that extent I think of Surprise HR as a gym for my career. If you spend enough time here you'll achieve things you never thought possible in a timeframe others won't believe...and then you'll do it again and again and again.

Cons

It can be difficult to see talented individuals fail to step up to succeed here. An unwavering definition of achievement can and has left people, good people, behind.
