Pros

cool office, other employees are fun. Nice place to work if you're an un-opinionated, agreeable robot.

Cons

leadership used the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to get rid of any employees that had their own thoughts or opinions about the product/road map - basically anyone who disagreed with the CEO/CTO was pushed out the door (and this isn't the first time they've done this - in my 1 year there I saw it happen to multiple groups of people). they assured the whole company that jobs were safe for at least 18 months at the beginning of April and less than a week later 15% of the company was let go due to "cash flow" issues. within the same quarter they hired new leadership roles ($$$$$) and were definitely not hurting financially. Sr. leadership micromanages and has virtually no transparency with the rest of the company. Also, all of the black employees at the company in the last couple of years were FIRED for poorly communicated reasons, whereas with other individual terminations there were clear explanations posted publicly slack - they didn't leave at their own will. Coincidence? You decide.

Thanks for providing this feedback. Any terminations we've made in the past have been for only two reasons: performance-related or due to our financial situation at the time. During the early stages of COVID-19, we saw a dramatic increase in cancellations from our merchants in the weeks that followed worldwide lockdowns as businesses struggled. This lead to us making the tough decision to let some of our staff go. This wasn't a decision that was taken lightly, but we ensured that everybody who left Smile had a fair package, and was supported. In the months that have followed, we saw an increase in eCommerce volume, and a corresponding increase in our sales. The only hires that joined our team during this phase or just before it were people who were signed and committed to Smile before COVID-19 accelerated. We're still being very cautious, and have not resumed normal hiring by any means. I'd really like you to be part of a transparent culture at Smile, including how we make decisions around people, roadmap, and everything in between. Please chat with me any time, or submit an anonymous message to me in our OfficeVibe Slackbot and we can chat there.

Pros

Colleagues are incredibly smart and capable, a joy to be around. Great work-life balance and perks. Really good about helping employees explore different interests in different departments. The head of merchant success is extremely competent.

Cons

Over a single year, 3 executives (heads of product, engineering, and people) were booted or left...one even resigned on the spot. None were backfilled, and the cofounders took on their roles instead so they wouldn't continue to get pushback from upper management. The company can't progress because of the brick wall the cofounders put up based on their experiences as a web agency 12 years ago.
