Pros

Many of the reviews on this page are sensationalized, exaggerated, or forced. I'm going to write what I think is a fair, neutral review of my time there. The environment is lighthearted but serious enough to get real work done. People are generally very friendly, happy to build relationships, and pleasant. Leadership is generally the same, and at the very least, puts on a front of approachability and transparency. In my experience (though I would guess not all share the same feelings), pay was fair and met market standards. I felt empowered to make my position my own and knew that my autonomy was both a benefit and deficit of my job. I felt like I had many opportunities to grow, in large part due to the fact that many of the job functionalities that would be held at another company were never even considered. There were many fun activities, the typically outfitted startup office, and plenty of enthusiasm for the future. I didn't dread going to work on the average day and was a generally happy employee.

Cons

Shopgate's failures unfortunately far outnumber its successes. Leadership is devastatingly incompetent, the company's "policy of transparency" is a hilarious farce, and the product itself is obsolete (to say the VERY least.) Members of leadership habitually gossip about employees beneath them. Harassment complaints – even those submitted against VPs –(brought forward with ample documentation), are repeatedly ignored. The CEO, while well-qualified and competent, has an alarming lack of interpersonal skills. The turnover rate is staggering but understandable. At the end of the day, Shopgate is a fun, but highly problematic place to work.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your time at Shopgate. We’re sorry you didn't have a great experience during your time here, and it's true that working at Shopgate isn't for everyone. Change is constant in our business, and we ask our team members to be incredibly scrappy and nimble as we serve customers in an industry that changes daily. Related to your comments on harassment, we have a zero tolerance policy and take these allegations very seriously and the proper protocol has taken place internally to explore and address any complaints. We’ve proactively undergone a rebirth in product, leadership and culture over the past year and half and we understand that your experience may have been flawed but we hope the steps we’ve taken as a company have improved and diminished these past issues of concern for now and in the future. On the issue of leadership and transparency, over the last 6 months, we’ve realigned our internal communications to include, weekly one-on-one’s with leadership, weekly all-team meetings, culture check-ins, anonymous surveys and a new US HR team to be available for current employees to have a space to share feedback, ask questions and ultimately, help to make Shopgate a great place to work. We’ve heard the feedback from our employees through these various channels and we’ve introduced many new programs to help set our employees up for success, things like new and improved health benefits, remote-flexibility and a peer-to-peer mentoring program for new hires, just to name a few. Thanks again for taking the time to leave this review and we wish you the best in your career.

Pros

I have been at Shopgate for the past year, one of the best career years of my life. Here are 5 reasons why: 1. We have the stability of a mature, global, well-funded company with the thrill of forging a new path as an Austin start-up. 2. Our growth has been incredible. With growth always comes organizational changes, but the company has handled those well and always taken good care of employees. 3. I am inspired to prioritize and do the work that provides the most business impact. And I’m supported with the resources needed to succeed. 4. Shopgate’s leadership is unmatched. Marc Biel, our CEO, has been rock solid at leading the charge and building the US efforts from scratch. 5. Standard start-up pros: snacks, beer, cold-brew on tap, valet parking, vibrant energetic office, catered lunches, company events, t-shirts, lots of swag All of the above reasons, make it so easy to get out of bed in the morning and walk into the office with a huge smile, ready to work with my team and take on the day. I look forward to years of continued personal and company growth at Shopgate.

Cons

It's a start-up. There are few process and we're still growing our tech stack. More than likely you have to create new process and figure out how to make things tick. Be willing to iterate when you figure out what works and what doesn't. If you want a simple, cookie cutter gig, Shopgate is not for you. If you have ideas and drive, you'll love it here.
