Pros

Org-level influence: Senior Directors play a critical role in shaping the engineering vision across multiple teams, aligning technology investments with long-term business priorities. Large-scale transformation opportunity: The organization is actively evolving its engineering foundation—creating immense space to standardize practices, modernize legacy systems, and elevate engineering quality across the board. Strong leadership access: Close engagement with executive leadership enables faster alignment on strategic initiatives and provides clear visibility into the company's long-term direction. Focus on building leaders: There is a genuine emphasis on developing Engineering Managers and senior Individual Contributors (ICs), offering great opportunities to strengthen leadership pipelines. Meaningful business impact: Engineering decisions directly influence key metrics, from customer experience to operational efficiency at scale.

Cons

Inconsistent maturity across teams: Different engineering groups are at varying stages of operational and process maturity, which can create gaps in execution standards and delivery velocity. Complex org dynamics: Navigating multiple matrixed teams and diverse stakeholder interests requires significant time and effort to drive alignment and unified prioritization. Balancing strategy vs. execution: Senior leaders often need to remain heavily hands-on in day-to-day execution while simultaneously driving long-term strategic initiatives. It can be a tough balancing act.

Pros

There are some truly amazing folks that work at Sequoia. They work really hard and many truly care about the work they are doing. Even when things get out of hand, the teams band together to help each other through whatever new debacle comes their way. And there is always a new debacle. Pay is higher than most…

Cons

Layoffs at random with no warning and little to no communication to those directly affected by it. If you’re a manager or above, you’ve received middle of the night unhinged emails that make for an anxiety inducing day/week/month ahead. In 6 years I had 8 managers for 3 roles (2 were within the same team)…If a manager tries to reign in crazy expectations or pivots so they don’t derail an entire team, they tend to disappear. Pay is higher than most but not enough for what is expected emotionally and physically.
