Pros

Very cool technology and it really feels like you are changing the world in some way. There is lots of freedom to be more than just a developer as you can choose to take part in customer demos and even get to travel sometimes.

Cons

CTO considers himself a Steve Jobs type so it's ok to not listen to your opion. He always has to be right and there is lots of micromanaging. Each project has multiple milestones and towards the end of a milestone there's lots of stress/pressure so there are frequent long nights.

Pros

You'll definitely become an expert at firefighting - both literal system fires and the metaphorical dumpster fires of unrealistic expectations. The technical challenges are real, which means your resume will look impressive afterward. Plus, you'll develop an almost supernatural ability to function on minimal sleep and maximum caffeine. The team genuinely cares about keeping things running, even when management treats uptime like magic that happens

Cons

"Work-life balance" is often treated as a mere suggestion rather than a fundamental human necessity. Compensation hasn't kept up with either inflation or industry standards, but mentioning this makes you "not a team player." The on-call rotation feels more like being held hostage by your phone. When systems break at 3 AM (which they do, frequently), you're expected to drop everything with the enthusiasm of someone who definitely isn't contemplating career changes while staring at error logs in their pyjamas.
