Pros

Over the past couple years the company has changed for the better. The Richardson office offers skills classes that help with our actual jobs and would cost us money on our own. We recently signed up for a Corporate Challenge, which brought together different parts of the business and really allowed us to get to know coworkers we wouldn’t normally interact with. The gym and cafeteria at our location is great as well. Overall the culture seems to be improving and getting to know my coworkers has been a huge morale booster.

Cons

The company doesn’t think/act like a growing technology company. There is a very “old school” mentality that is very damaging to the actual workers, which causes heavy turnover. There is a rumor of not allowing remote employees anymore. The most successful technology companies have employees scattered all over the world. You don’t have to be face to face to be productive. Studies have shown remote employees are more productive. We are also forced to participate in surveys that ask us about our manager. We’ve completed this survey for over 3 years I believe and literally nothing has changed. The questions are redundant and no one answers truthfully. One reason is that we don’t trust that the survey is truly anonymous. Second reason is that it’s way too long and we are way too busy. Leadership is not transparent enough for us to trust answering truthfully. Our benefits are VERY limited. We only offer one medical option and it’s not really a benefit for those of us that don’t meet our deductible. 401(k) vesting and match are not great by any means. Pay isn’t horrible, but it’s also not great. Management doesn’t like to pay people for what the actually bring to the table, but instead bring them in low and make it impossible to reach reasonable pay. This also causes much turnover.

Thank you for your post. We appreciate and agree with your observations that we are trying very hard to build a great work environment. The Corporate Challenge was for a great cause and it was fun as well. As I got into your cons there were a couple of things that jumped out at me. We offer the engagement survey every year, because we want to know and understand how our employees are feeling about RealPage. Participation was 83% across the globe last year. Its unfortunate that your function appears to have not maximized the value of the survey. You should absolutely demand what other departments are doing is looking for ways to be better. Our benefits are really much better than you are eluding to. Yes we offer only one medical plan to new hires. We actually have several medical plans in the US. HMOs on the west coast, HDHC and we left a PPO plan in place and grandfathered those into it who wanted it to remain. Our plan design pays 100% after you meet your deductible. Its sounds like you have been healthy enough not to need that coverage. It should also be pointed out we keep our premiums lower than industry average so there is an offset to the plan. On to your advice, I agree with you regarding getting out and talking to the teams. We are making a conscious effort to do more of that. We spend a lot of time trying to figure out ways to make the environment better each day for everyone. Thank you for your comprehensive and balanced feedback. Sincerely, Kurt Twining

Pros

Good engineering tooling. Talented engineers and teammates. Flexible remote work.

Cons

I ran one of RealPage's larger engineering product teams for three years, hiring and developing more than half of the engineering managers and engineers on my organization. I believed I was building something that mattered. Instead of promoting the person already doing the work, leadership hired a lateral engineering manager alongside me. Over time, responsibility stayed with me while authority and support shifted elsewhere. I became the person expected to absorb every problem. My first manager used me to fill every gap instead of developing me. I was expected to handle support, incident response, production releases, coding, architecture, project management, and people management—all at the same time. My second manager sidelined me, criticized me, and focused on replacing me instead of developing me. I was once told I was "lucky to be useful, or I wouldn't still be here." That statement summed up the culture. Leadership expected constant availability while frequently being unavailable themselves. When leadership was out, I was expected to cover. I spent over a year supporting both U.S. and India time zones, making true time off nearly impossible. RealPage has incredibly talented people, but talented employees cannot overcome a culture where managers are consumed instead of developed. I loved building teams. I just wish the company had valued the people who built them.
