Pros

Exposure to an emerging hydrogen industry and hands-on involvement across operations, engineering, and production in a startup environment. Opportunity to take ownership early and work across multiple functions.

Cons

Safety culture is inconsistent, with unsafe practices and conditions observed on the floor that are not always addressed in a timely or corrective manner. Production urgency frequently outweighs proper risk assessment, training, and enforcement of standard procedures. Workforce planning is weak, leading to chronic understaffing, extended work hours, and situations where operators feel discouraged from taking leave. Overtime is often treated as an expectation rather than a choice, increasing fatigue, burnout, and the likelihood of quality or safety incidents. Additionally, there is a disconnect between what is labeled as “production” and what is actually being built. Much of the work resembles demonstrations, temporary setups, or non-production-ready assemblies rather than repeatable, validated products. Systems are often incomplete, reworked frequently, or not fully functional, yet timelines and messaging suggest otherwise. This creates confusion internally, undermines engineering rigor, and makes it difficult to establish true production readiness, quality standards, or long-term scalability. Processes and documentation are immature, roles and responsibilities are unclear, and priorities shift frequently without adequate communication or accountability. Engineers are expected to take ownership without sufficient authority, resources, or leadership alignment, resulting in constant firefighting instead of sustainable improvement.

Pros

The unique engineering challenges I face every day keep me excited to learn and are exactly what shape you into a great engineer. The hydrogen industry is at the forefront of technological advancement and is critical to addressing the climate crisis; working here gives me the opportunity to contribute directly to that transformation. Fresh out of university, OneH2 provided me with a platform to not only translate theoretical concepts into reality but also entrusted me with crucial decisions that have made a significant impact on the company. This experience is further enriched by regular site visits and interactions with various vendors, which have significantly expanded both my technical knowledge and professional network. On top of the professional fulfillment, the company also offers excellent health benefits.

Cons

The company has significant room for improvement. The management style tends to be authoritative rather than collaborative. Additionally, decisions are often made to move forward on projects without gauging the required bandwidth. As a result, the sense of time management is lost, leading to teams facing unrealistic goals and crunched deadlines. Compounding this is a strain on work-life balance; the excessive hours required take a toll not just mentally, but also implicitly diminish the value of the compensation provided. Addressing these operational gaps is the only thing standing in the way of unlocking the full potential of this talented team.
