Pros

The Rank & File operational staff who are drawn to the mission are some of the best and brightest. Some teams are well-insulated and probably having a blast. People with incredible career arcs land at the museum.

Cons

-And their careers die at the museum. The altruistic desire that attracts so many wonderful people (Educators in particular) becomes a routinely used cudgel of manipulation. The kool-aid drinking and the high school politics of vain, highly-insecure management reveals itself quickly -as well as the incompetence of verbose bullsh*t artists in high places. Truly, advancement is only possible for people who look (and think) a certain way. And there are snakes aplenty who will throw you under the bus to advance themselves -and then speak at a conference with a glowing smile. Do great work for a decade? -No one cares. But if a certain person insinuates a tone in an email? -You're head's on the chopping block.

Pros

When management is competent, the experience is great. There's tons of really cool teaching materials (bones, minerals, taxidermy, etc.) donated over the decades. There used to be a really lovely culture of inclusion, history, and community out there. Summer is brutally hot but can also be really fun.

Cons

Management plays favorites, violates safety codes, undermines staff, pits people against each other, and can't open a word document to save their lives. Fire and safety protocol are not clear and misunderstood by the person in charge.
