Extremely generous benefits - horrific work culture and HR department - IT Analyst Johnson County, Kansas Employee Review

Pros

JOCO without a doubt has the best fringe benefit package that myself and likely many others have ever had in their professional careers. The vacation and sick time accruals are great, the 457 plan (similar to 401k) is good and when combined with KPERS (public pension) makes retirement options even better. Most departments seem to be really good with work-life balance options and if the position allows, I believe most people are permitted to telework if necessary.

Cons

Stereotypical government entity where people who have worked there for 15-30+ years are usually the least productive, yet highest paid because they have a pulse and continue to get their automatic 3% raises every single year. New external employees who come in and immediately start identifying the numerous problems and lack of work ethic are typically the ones who run into personal conflicts with the "deadwood" employees. The employees who produce the least and who are eventually called out on their lack of worth ethic will typically run and cry to HR who will then initiate an "investigation". It is literally the cultural norm at Johnson County to have the HR department scrutinize and investigate everything and more often than not, it's the most valued and productive employees who end up in a bad situation with HR. The "deadwood" is literally a protected class at Johnson County and it doesn't take much searching around the Internet to fine similar comments and reviews. Unfortunately this culture has been in place for many years.
