Pros

I worked in the AVRR (REAG / GARP) department in Nuremberg. I was happy and proud to be part of the IOM. Unfortunately I soon learned that there is nothing humane about this humanitarian organisation. Pros? a perfect place to recommend to your enemies.

Cons

Corruption, nepotism, racism, bigotry, mobbing, and 100% toxic. The best are being mobbed out and people quit on a regular basis. Only the ones who are cooperating with this toxicity are being rewarded. Instead of promoting their loyal hard working employees, they hire external candidates who usually quit after a few months. Or ‘give’ the position to unqualified family members or friends. Speaking of friends: though internships were unpaid, when it comes to people of interest this rule seems to be flexible. These privileged “children of” interns also get paid unlike other interns. Conflict of interest, Corrupt and collusive practice: the daughter of the main service provider works there. That puts her fathers company in a position to have access to information about influence and bidding, not to mention the confidentiality problem, among other corruption cases. There is a constant atmosphere of fear and passive aggressiveness in the office. Many previous (and current) employees needed long medical treatment after working there. You also cannot talk to the unqualified HR team, who keep no confidentiality and immediately report in the form of gossip to the related people. As a result- employers sit frustrated, frightened and sobbing behind their desks. Cultish secretive vibe, peculiar relationships between some female seniors and staff, people getting fired while on Sick Leave, endless racist comments (also towards the beneficiaries), foreign employees who are on the verge of deportation because HR fails to provide them with the necessary papers on time and the list goes on and on… It is as if they are all busy with gossiping and making each others lives miserable . If you are there to actually work, learn and suggest new ideas to facilitate processes, you will soon be targeted as the next victim (and boy these women love new and fresh targets). So if you have 1 ounce of intelligence, you probably wont get far. Signora Chief of Mission is well aware of the situation (!) however "chooses" (as she puts it) to support this hostile, and sick environment. This organisation/ mission is just too bad to be true in every possible way. If you are truly passionate about a career in the humanitarian field- DO –NOT- APPLY!!!! It will literally ruin your faith in humanity.

IOM Response

Dear Sender, We apologize that your working experience with IOM Germany has been so unpleasant for you. It is important for us to emphasize that we, at IOM Germany, work hard in creating a working environment where employees feel safe, supported and valued for their skills and competencies. It is also of utmost importance to us that employees can voice their discomfort or any possible mistreatment from colleagues or supervisors at a place which feels trustworthy. To ensure this, we have put several structures and contact points in place, be it the Respectful Workplace Focal Point, the Ombudsperson or our HR team which are available for all staff. Please be assured that we handle all criticism which we receive through those points with absolute anonymity and diligence. The Senior Management listens to it carefully, as we cannot grow or improve as an organization without doing so. Moreover, sharing in rumors or even contributing to a negative environment goes completely against everything IOM Germany stands for. We actively work towards a positive and respectful workplace having already offered staff trainings such as “Stress Management”, “How to say No” or “LGTBQI Awareness”, to just name a few. These trainings aim at sensitizing all staff on how to establish an inclusive, respectful and appreciative working environment where employees can thrive. Moreover, as an International Organization, we do work with beneficiaries from all over the world and are in contact with international colleagues daily. Consecutively, there is zero tolerance for racism at IOM and should we be informed about it, we take immediate action. To conclude, we need to reject the allegations of corruption and nepotism. We follow rigorously IOM’s ethical guidelines and Code of Conduct and are thankful for every staff member who joins us and seeks to support IOM Germany on this journey. Best, IOM Germany
