Pros

The markdowns are drastic, and a lot of the merchandise goes on sale rather quickly. So there is always something to grab.

Cons

The work culture is surprisingly not what one would think Holt Renfrew to be when I began to work there. You would think it would be the creme de la creme of luxury retail in Canada. There is a lack of professionalism and the culture is rather juvenile and superficial and not really business minded. The sales associates lack passion and seem entitled and because they may be commission based, you may see sales associates be vindictive to one another. You eventually feel like you are with the used car salesman of high fashion retail. The corporate culture is to blame because there seems to be a "not my problem, someone else will deal with it" attitude that results in nobody taking ownership and nothing ultimately getting done in all departments. The HR department at the Bloor/Head office location is not supportive and I noticed this from a personal experience I had with an abusive manager that they hold a strong bias against workers in their company that may have an internal problem. It was partly the reason why I left because of the ladies in the department not following up with the matter and hope it would just disappear.

Pros

I cannot recommend working here enough. My time here was so much fun. The work environment also added to my great experience working at Holt Renfrew. This company caters well to their clients and employees. I loved being able to have a say in which brands the department would bring in. The sales associates are the ones most connected with the clients so I enjoyed that they listened to our opinions. The management was very good also and I found that everyone had lots of experience and were qualified to be managers (unlike Nordstrom, which lets people be in management who shouldn’t.) The company holds many events which is fun for employees and clients alike. Overall, I would recommend working here to anyone.

Cons

If you are working on full commission it can be difficult to make income when slow seasons come and I think they should change that because it would create a less competitive environment and allow employees to make more genuine connections with the clients. This is only in one department.
