Pros

There are many good reasons to stay at the same company. Loyalty comes to mind because if you are loyal in your job, do the best you can and learn as much as you can, you will be much more needed. Dependability is another good trait to have in order to stay at the same company. Liking your job and what you do encourages you to do a better job. You show more interest in learning and you are more ambitious. People in a company will notice you more when you have a positive attitude and take an interest in your job. Staying at the same company does not mean you have to stay in the same job. If you work hard at your present job and know your job and another job becomes available within the company, you can put in for a transfer and excel to a better position. Most companies will hire within their company rather than going to the outside, especially if you have all of the above mentioned traits and characteristics. Another good reason for staying at the same company is job security. The more years you work at the same company equals the more job security you have. A lot of companies recognize their employees for so many years of service, which is nice. Being in the same company for any length of time says that you are a very dedicated employee who shows up for work on time every day. Companies are always looking for loyal people who take their job serious. Showing initiative and wanting to learn everything there is about your job always catches the eye of the employer. This is beneficial because a company will not want to let go of an employee like that. When you are in a company for a long time you usually get a decent retirement package and that is a plus for when you get older and want to retire after so many years of commitment to the same company. It's always a good thing to work at a company for as long as you can because stability does pay off, and usually pays off in dollars. Also, it looks good on a résumé that you have worked at a company for a long time when it is time to look for another job for one reason or the other.

Cons

Sometimes I wonder if I’m the only one who thinks management’s craving for loyalty is out of step with the new reality: that markets are no longer loyal to anyone. Is seniority = superiority? Sometimes yes but often not. The ugly truth is many of them are simply not good enough to attract better-paying jobs or are just too afraid to venture outside their comfort zones. Stability is not always what it seems.
