Pros

Great projects when you work with international offices. You can learn from more experienced designers from other offices. HR is non-existent, Employee rotation is extremely high as the company is known for hiring junior designers and burning them out.

Cons

It has changed a lot after the pandemic with the new CR principals. Higher management without any management experience, only people with high status and connections taking credit for work they haven´t done. You won´t grow if you're talented, only if you know the right people. Salaries are one of the worst in the sector, it's a fireable offense to disclose your salary or your bonus, as they are completely subjective, and salary raises are almost impossible to get, not even to compensate for inflation. No learning and development from the company, you have to do it in your personal time. No work-life balance, expect to work a minimum of 48 weekly hours under constant stress from design directors and managers. No research and development. Costa Rica business model is the one of a sweat shop, you´ll eat at your desk, work late and weekends on deliveries. Toxic managers are the rule and won´t go away anytime soon as they are friends of higher management (Including widely known cases of sexual harassment without any consequences ). Almost everybody I worked with directly was in therapy due to mental issues caused by management and workload.

Pros

Nice office, lots of “rah rah Gensler” events with food & booze, some nice people

Cons

Where do I start…..some studios are TOXIC. Favoritism permeates every aspect of working here. It’s nauseating. There is zero loyalty, zero recognition for hard work (yeah you get a bonus but sometimes a kind word is needed). Oh-and never ever express an opinion that may be in opposition to “leadership’s”. Your private life, beliefs, politics and other personal things are fair game for letting you go. I’ve seen it happen-fired because someone expresses in a private conversation that one has ethical concerns regarding projects that are in the office (but in another studio/office) will get you fired. They will make up some bs about “work performance”, yet no conversation ever with anyone about “needing improvement “. Out of left field. Bye bye. Management tells leadership that they’d already “warned” the person-completely untrue. Hear later it was likely due to having concerns about a client/project. Lesson learned-shut up, work 12 hrs a day and be happy with the scraps you’re thrown. Also-egos galore! Unwillingness to take accountability for mistakes.
