Pros

If you have a good rental month, you can end up with a decent bonus, of course, it isn't something you can depend on, as there are plenty of slower months where your threshold to bonus is much too high to actually make anything.

Cons

Scrubbing units in the bitter cold mid winter, or in extreme heat during the summer can be difficult. You will be expected to do everything on site depending on your DM to save costs, so be prepared to do all the maintenance, painting, etc. on your own, no one is paying a contractor to fix your site barring extreme circumstances. Although I was initially took the job because they made clear the promotion potential, and their focus on promoting from within, I have noticed in the last year that all of the corporate positions filled (DM, DLM, etc.), have been filled by people not only brand new to Extra Space, but brand new to storage in general. This is extremely discouraging to me and many others, as we expected that putting in the time and work would result in us moving up and ultimately in the company gaining more qualified individuals. Very high turnover, while perhaps not every district has this problem, we are constantly losing people. Every time we hire an employee, or two, one, or two employees quit. Many have taken better positions elsewhere, some just don't seem to expect the amount of physical labor required for the job, either way, people are constantly leaving, meaning those of us that stay are also constantly training.

Pros

Solid schedule - 40 hours per week, not expected to be there more than that. No one looking over your shoulder constantly (unless you have a new DM, they can't seem to help it) Mostly great people to work with Local, immediate management does care and are helpful.

Cons

Very large rate increases really upset customers and that's just too bad. We are given word to tell them but it just isn't true. Putting more money in stock holder's pockets is the bottom line and it doesn't matter how much anger we have to deal with. You are absolutely expected to sell insurance to every renter. However, you must be careful because you aren't "insurance salesmen". You get a ding when you don't sell it. We are encouraged to use evasive language and rush through it so the renter thinks it's required without quite saying so. You would think this large of a corporation would have handymen available but it is so, so difficult to get the smallest repair done due to getting bids from vendors, turning them in, reminding the person you turned them in to what needs done maybe getting approval, then scheduling. By that time lights (or whatever) have been out for a month or 2. Benefits are very expensive and cover so little.
