Pros

Not working on Sunday, seasonal work environment, better base pay compared to competitors.

Cons

No sense of direction (very indecisive), highest turnover rate I have ever witnessed, there's absolutely no structure (schedules were a constant disaster), district managers are always trying to take the easy way out because they're too busy running around like chickens with their head cut off. They never seem to be prepared for anything, everything always feels last minute, like they're winging it...chickens I tell you. They're constantly making changes without proper notification both internally and externally, it's pretty common to receive an apology email as an employee and/or customer because they failed to give notice of any updates and changes. They are growing fast, which sounds positive, but unfortunately they just don't seem have the qualified leadership to properly manage their daily operations. Company morale has been trending down for over a year from my experience and nobody seems to be willing to do anything about it. You hear a lot of great things, but soon understand that words mean little to nothing when it chines to the integrity of this company. Extra Space Storage used to be a great company and I used to enjoy working there, but I left because they are falling apart. With this acquisition we were experiencing a lot of employees leaving or being encouraged to leave, and yet somehow they seem to be more focused on the next person they want to fire rather than the next person they need to hire. Over my tenure I worked with a full staff for a brief stint of maybe one or two months. You will be constantly told to transfer to or cover other facilities because your district is always understaffed so be prepared to drive, but more importantly, be prepared to be told that you're going to work at another facility as late as the night before you're expected to work there.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed review on GlassDoor. We appreciate all feedback as it helps us get a better perspective from the employee side. I know there are challenges with high growth. Most of our employees are feeling the challenge that comes from growth. In my opinion it is why Extra Space is such a great place to work. Our employees get stretched and have opportunities to grow every day. It is because of the growth that has provided many opportunities for employees to advance their careers. Thanks again for the feedback. Best of luck to you in your new adventure!

Pros

Solid schedule - 40 hours per week, not expected to be there more than that. No one looking over your shoulder constantly (unless you have a new DM, they can't seem to help it) Mostly great people to work with Local, immediate management does care and are helpful.

Cons

Very large rate increases really upset customers and that's just too bad. We are given word to tell them but it just isn't true. Putting more money in stock holder's pockets is the bottom line and it doesn't matter how much anger we have to deal with. You are absolutely expected to sell insurance to every renter. However, you must be careful because you aren't "insurance salesmen". You get a ding when you don't sell it. We are encouraged to use evasive language and rush through it so the renter thinks it's required without quite saying so. You would think this large of a corporation would have handymen available but it is so, so difficult to get the smallest repair done due to getting bids from vendors, turning them in, reminding the person you turned them in to what needs done maybe getting approval, then scheduling. By that time lights (or whatever) have been out for a month or 2. Benefits are very expensive and cover so little.
