Pros

1. Resident Relationships Building strong connections with residents and their families. That kind of human-centered work is rewarding and meaningful—especially when you know you’re making someone’s life better. 2. Team Camaraderie (At the Ground Level) Among frontline staff—especially in recreation and PSW teams—there was genuine support, teamwork, and care. 3. Experience and Growth The workload was intense, but availability to gain a wide range of skills: admissions, crisis mediation, student supervision, interdisciplinary planning, and navigating challenging dynamics. 4. Opportunity to Advocate The direct contact with families and residents, giving lots of opportunities to advocate for others. 5. Program Exposure Involvement with student placements, staff orientation, IDCCs, and family meetings—experience that adds real depth to a professional profile.

Cons

1. Toxic Leadership Culture Favoritism and nepotism, exclusion, backdoor promotions, and inner circles defined the leadership model. It created a culture where hard work and integrity were punished instead of rewarded. 2. Lack of Recognition Despite taking on more than the role required, were often overlooked—left out of events, decisions, and acknowledgment. 3. Job Insecurity People were let go without transparency. There was no progressive discipline or clear performance management—just sudden removals that left others in fear of being next. 4. Burnout and Overload Often doing the job of two or three people, often without breaks, compensation, or formal support. That level of strain is unsustainable and harmful to a person's well-being. 5. Silencing and Undermining Raising concerns or advocating for residents and staff often led to pushback, cold treatment, or retaliation. Leadership prioritized compliance and control over collaboration and communication.

Pros

I enjoy working with some of the people I have met, and the salary is OK. The residents are mostly great to work with. At the facility level they do have policies and procedures, and they try hard to follow them. The regional staff members are nice and lend an ear (or a hand) when things are really tough at the facility. They are also very knowledgeable about their jobs and about how things work "the extendicare way".

Cons

Poor attitudes, and most people talk to you like you're dirt. It is very hard not to walk by someone without receiving a death stare. There is little to no support from the administrators, because they are too busy dealing with childish problems among the staff. There are few managers who actually know how to manage, and that gets tricky when issues arise. The building is never clean no matter how hard the housekeeping staff works...which is pretty much not at all. Questions and concerns often fall on deaf ears and communication is a major hurdle for a lot of these individuals. Administrators and DON see fit to only hire people they know so if those people cause problems, it can be difficult to get them to actually reprimand them or handle the situation.
