Pros

If you live in an Equity Residential building, you get a rent discount. They have a great training program. The benefits package was decent.

Cons

They expect too much of the employees at large properties. I was doing the job of two people. They also secret shop you, requiring you to say certain things and forcing your pitch. You are allowed no freedom as a salesperson to read the customer, no matter how many performance awards you've received. If you live on the property, the discount is not enough to deal with never leaving work. Fire alarm? Crazy resident? Walking your dog? You are always on duty. Only the Property Manager gets to live on site for free. The Assistant Manager deals with just as many hassles, sometimes more, but only gets 20%. Corporate pep rallies are excruciating. They made us dress up and the executives showed up in suits. It's tough to have a professional, face to face with your boss while wearing a football jersey and a boa. They seemed to like it that way.

Pros

Housing discount, strong portfolio exposure, opportunity to work across multiple communities, and valuable experience in a fast-paced leasing environment.

Cons

Management loves to preach “teamwork” until something goes wrong, then suddenly it’s every employee for themselves. Very documentation-heavy culture where certain managers seem to enjoy writing people up more than actually developing talent. Communication is inconsistent, accountability is selective, and favoritism is hard to ignore. Commission structure is shockingly low for the workload and expectations. Leadership often presents itself as organized and supportive, but behind the scenes there’s a lot of blame-shifting, targeting of employees, and policy confusion — especially regarding employee housing and lease transitions. My own experience at the end of my employee lease felt retaliatory and left a very negative impression.
