Pros
They really do give you responsibility from day 1, but in a lot of cases you're filling in for someone who has already left - with luck, they'll still be in the company but doing another role, but it's also possible that they left the company, due to its high turnover. Therefore, it's necessary that you're proactive and a self-taught learner, who is not afraid to make mistakes and learn on the job. It's a good place to learn, and you'll be able to see a lot of the challenges that can happen in a company, which will help you think differently. At Emma, the general belief is that you don't need experience to be able to do a job, so that's a plus when it comes to giving everyone opportunities .The people are nice, especially outside of the work environment. It's generally fun after work, and there are a lot of young people.
Cons
The company is mismanaged, with no real sense of strategy or business acumen. The strategy changes quickly and it's often based on weekly performance data, which doesn't give you real insights on what and where to change. The higher management wants fast results (what they call "quick wins"), but there isn't a real effort to think how to actually get there and how to build long-term results. Profits are prioritised over customer service and employee well-being, and the priority is to grow sales, even if that's at the expense of customers and/or employees. This kind of employee pressure sometimes results in people competing with each other and making rude comments in front of the team, which can create a rather toxic environment if you don't stand up for yourself.
