Declining Work Environment - Analytics Compassion International Employee Review

Pros

This is a Christian organization and it shows! The average coworker is a lot more caring and respectful than what I have experienced in more secular businesses. There are fewer bad apples here. The retirement contribution is excellent as is the PTO. The program itself is Christ-centered, and your donation is being well-used. The Analytics space has a lot of good tools to use such as Snowflake, AWS, Tableau, etc.

Cons

The organization is struggling to grow in sponsorships and revenue. While you can find numbers to show revenue and sponsorships are doing okay if evaluated from certain angles, Compassion's internal actions suggest that things are not going well. There have now been 3 rounds of layoffs in marketing, one in HR, and Compassion eliminated an entire division. We have had a deterioration in health insurance - not only have premiums increased, but they dropped coinsurance rates (and the insurance is UnitedHealthcare affiliated with all its quality...). There have been minimal merit raises, you now have to trade your own PTO for a small bonus, they took away office equipment stipends. They even took away the employee years-of-service benefits where you can go to the field at see the program in action for working 5, 10, and 15 years. I have also seen top performers leave Compassion for better opportunities. While Compassion has framed all this as conservative stewardship, it's really no different than any other company that cuts employees and benefits when the revenue expectations don't work out. Why did they not work out? It's partly bad leadership (chief marketing officer resigned), and partly the current economic climate affecting Christian nonprofits. While analytical tools are good, the environment for analytics professionals is poor. You do not get to work with other technical staff, most marketing types do not understand your workflows, and truthfully the talent level tends to be on the low end. Compassion does a lot of talking, especially at offsites; however, it rarely feels efficient and usually does not lead to significant change or innovation. None of this means Compassion can't be a great place to work for you, but the employee experience has been in decline over the past couple years. You (the prospective employee) will have to make a call on whether you expect Compassion to continue its path of degrading employment through cost cutting or if you expect things to turn around.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. We appreciate your recognition of our Christ-centered culture and caring colleagues—these remain core to who we are. While we’re sorry you feel the work environment is in decline, this is not consistent with the feedback we receive from most staff. Our last two anonymous employee surveys (2024 & 2025) show improvement across all eight indexes measuring engagement, psychological safety, inclusion, leadership, development, well-being, executive leadership and cultural behaviors. We stand behind our compensation and benefits programs in comparison to the nonprofit sector. Competitive highlights include a strong retirement contribution, annual merit increases, flexible hybrid work, geographic pay differential, generous parental leave, extra holiday time, inflation adjustments for global staff and pastoral care. Our voluntary turnover remains well below sector averages (5% globally vs. 19%). Regarding workforce changes, the reduction three years ago was to invest more in marketing and innovation, and recent outsourcing decisions were made to reduce costs. In both cases, we provided extended notice and generous transition support. While difficult decisions will continue as we adapt to changing realities, we remain committed to treating people with compassion, dignity and integrity. Finally, anniversary trips were discontinued because they were U.S.-only and placed a growing burden on global offices without an equivalent benefit for non-U.S. staff. We strive for equity across our global workforce. Thank you again for your feedback and for helping advance our mission to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name.

Pros

I can't say enough good things about Compassion. I've been here almost eight years, and I have no plans of changing that any time soon. The holistic model they have for child sponsorship. They have a similar holistic view of their employees. There's a strong focus on work-life balance. They make a generous contribution to our retirement plans. I may not have this quote exactly right, but I believe the president of Compassion has said, "The most important thing about you to Compassion is not what you do, but it's who you are." And I believe him.

Cons

No place is perfect, and the bigger they are, the less perfect they are. I wish it didn't take as long as it does to bring about change when it is needed, but it's a big ship and it's slow to turn. However, to paraphrase a funny quote, "Compassion is a lot like pizza. Even when it's bad, it's still pretty good."
