Pros

The company offers Interesting work and good opportunities and funding to grow as a professional. The organization has a team-oriented environment and collaborative culture as well as very smart and skilled co-workers. The company is committed to social justice, equity, and the public good. These values are not just professed but are evident in a the way employees are treated and the way the company completes projects and works with clients. Management and senior staff are very accessible and open to the opinions and perspectives of junior staff.

Cons

The company is small and at times this may cause staff to have heavy workloads. However, in these situations I have been able to just speak with my project directors and supervisor to find a solution. The 90% billable hours goal increases efficiency and productivity but can also make it difficult to balance personal demands and work demands, especially when important work activities like business development and company trainings or meetings can take well over 10% time to complete.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this review and help me and others learn about Community Science. It makes me happy to know that our staff see us as being consistent to our mission and values. That has been our commitment from day one. As you well know, I and other senior staff share that heavy workload, It is the nature of the processional services industry and employees coming from other companies, especially the larger ones, report that our policies are relatively more relaxed. Nonetheless, that is not good enough for us and improving the work demands and stress on employees is a top priority this year. I tell prospective employees that they should expect to work 45 hours per week on average and it "ebbs and flows" as another reviewer mentioned. This is a demanding type of work, but that's how we get the great projects, funds for extensive professional development, state of the art equipment, etc. Time spent on business and professional development are considered in the system. There's a lot of exciting things ahead of us. Thanks again. David

Thank you for your feedback and support of our work. We are only as good as the people who we work with, our community. I feel very lucky that I can work with you and your colleagues. Needless to say it's been a crazy year, but we have been successful together and am looking forward to the great things we can accomplish in 2021. As I've written before, the professional services industry may not be for everyone, but you if you want to be helping to transform government, foundations, and nonprofit organizations cross country-this is a great spot to be in. So many exciting things going on. More advice and great ideas are so appreciated. Thank you again.

Pros

Community Science is a unique company that combines a social mission and ethics with impressive private sector efficiency. For Managing Associates there are ample opportunities to develop new and diverse skills; practice and hone research, facilitation and analytic skills; and receive top-quality mentorship and coaching from experienced senior staff. The leadership team cares about theory as well as practice, and upholds models of evidence-based practice and organizational learning throughout the company’s work. Community Science leaders also value high quality of research, client relationships and deliverables in implementing projects. Staff members – from leadership to associates – are dedicated, hard-working, and extremely intelligent, as well as current and future thought leaders and overall inspiring people. Community Science also offers competitive salaries and generous fringe benefits. Also, management at Community Science works with staff to provide support and accommodations for addressing personal and family issues and is flexible about working from home as long as deliverables are on time and of high quality. The company cares about employees and does its best to apply its values to the operation of company as well as the work it does.

Cons

The personalized management style combined with the 90% billable hours goal for Managing Associates (which has the advantage of increasing efficiency of the company) style leads to a strained and hierarchical culture. The level of collaboration within and across teams, as well as day-to-day communications among staff could be improved.

Thanks for the positive review even after you have moved on to hopefully better opportunities. We are trying to do our best to be great in every way and still keep our focus on social justice and strong communities. When you are so passionate about what we do. As you know, we are working to be better and to continue our healthy growth. Part of that healthy growth is to reduce the workload stress. That has been a top priority for the rest of this year for our management team along with improved interaction among our fantastic staff as well as greater engagement in company direction and transparency.
