Mission Abandoned: Accountability for Some, Mediocrity for Others - Anonymous employee Community Catalyst Employee Review

Pros

The organization offers a flexible schedule, which made it easier to balance work and personal responsibilities. There are opportunities to connect with national partners and gain exposure to important healthcare and equity issues, which can be valuable for professional development. Some colleagues are deeply committed to the mission, and working alongside peers who genuinely care about the work was one of the few bright spots.

Cons

The positives are consistently undermined by poor leadership practices. Senior leadership often displayed microaggressions and lacked the expertise to effectively guide staff. Instead of developing internal talent, leadership leaned heavily on consultants—while staff with proven skills were pressured to overperform and “prove themselves” over and over again. At the same time, others were allowed to coast without accountability, rewarded for mediocrity rather than excellence. This double standard created a culture of inequity and frustration. Over time, the organization shifted away from being collaborative and equity-driven to becoming whitewashed and disconnected from its mission. The lack of transparency, inconsistent accountability, and values not aligning with daily practice made it increasingly difficult to stay motivated.

Pros

Remote work, PTO, in this environment- having a job

Cons

This organization has gone from being a great place to work to a deeply frustrating and disorganized one. Nearly all leadership has changed and come across as unapproachable or dismissive. The one leader that remained is out of touch and part of the problem (they were the previous interim co-ED), but was somehow promoted which is a joke and insult to remaining staff. There is little consistency in messaging. Staff are told the organization is struggling and failing, then immediately told everything is fine and we are doing great. Also, the organization’s mission and vision have shifted, but these changes have not been communicated to staff. As a result, many employees feel disconnected from the direction of the organization and do not trust leadership. Also, financial concerns are ongoing, with little confidence in the organization’s ability to sustain itself. Staff layoffs were recent and the folks doing the day-to-day work are overworked because there is not enough staff. Yet, there seems to be a new position posted for a leadership role every few weeks, but none to advance the day-to-day work. Overall, the current environment lacks clarity, consistency, and confidence in leadership. Unless you want to be overworked, stressed, and annoyed, I do not recommend working here.
