Pros

Autonomy, Liberty, Pride in making a difference in small business (PME/SME) economy. Very good salary, way higher than the average salary if you commit yourself to work full days and are interested in the ongoing victories and battles that FCEI/CFIB are doing. The Team are one of the main reasons to fell supported in this organization. Starting from our president that is with us since more than 25 years and knows everyone across canada by our names . A team of V-P and executive that are very human, down to earth and very passionate about who we are and what we can do to help small business succeed. Each district manager are working towards the same goal and it’s like a big family. You can always count on anyone by phone, by text, by our shared whatsapp group (In Quebec, probably elsewhere too!) to help each other. You never feel alone. CFIB/FCEI also brings lots of carreer opportunities accross the country. We are just limited by our own beliefs, because if you work hard, you can fill any position that you want and earn the salary that you want, even much higher than the advertise average yearly pay that is posted here.

Cons

The only challenges for me was to learn a script before getting on the field. To be honest, it’s not easy, but if you’re reading that because you have an interest in sending your resume to CFIB/FCEI, I have a secret for you! The script might sounds diffucult to learn at first, but TRUST me, it doesn’t feel and sound like a script when you master it. You can really interact with business owners (and listen to them) while having a very solid script as a base for this presentation. The script after 2-3-4 weeks on the field will really make senses to you and every word will have is value. The Management team is always listening to constructive feedback here on Glassdoor and from the District managers on the field and they just launch a very new script more adapted to 2019. Personally i’m at CFIB since the end of 2016 and I like the old and the new script equally, but the new one is very easier to learn and it’s a more interactive one with the business owners. So, don’t be afraid of the script, and apply now if making a difference in the economy is something that you share with us.

Wow, what a nice comment. You’ve made my week! You are absolutely right about the benefits of working for an organization that makes a difference. It is the reason I’ve been at CFIB for 25 years and we have so many other long-term colleagues in every part of the organization. We all need to work to earn a good living to support ourselves and our families, but more and more Canadians want their job to help make a difference in the world. Working to support entrepreneurs and allowing them to focus more of their time and resources on growing their firms and hiring people really feels good. I’m pleased that you have found a dedicated group of colleagues and a supportive management team. We take this very seriously. And I also paid close attention to your comments on our scripted presentation. I know that it is not always easy for any of us to memorize several paragraphs of text (and it is even harder for me when I hit 50). Still, to protect the integrity of the organization, it is important that we give all business owners a common understanding of the benefits, and sometimes the limitations, of membership. This is why we’ve recently launched a new presentation, which reduces the sections that need to be memorized and replaces them with a way to present a common message while allowing flexibility in how it is communicated. Thanks again for the comments and please don’t be shy to share any suggestions for improvements directly with me. Our entire senior management team spent two days pouring over the results of a staff survey and I read every one of the 60 pages of comments from well-over half of our 400 staff. Thanks for the positive review. No surprise, but I agree with you that we have a positive working environment and some incredible people working for the Federation. I just wrapped up 2 days hosting our new colleagues from across Canada in our national office in Toronto. It was great fun and left me very confident in the new crop of staff we are bringing in across the organization.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m pleased that you identified with our cause at CFIB. Small business owners have really struggled this past year and I have been so impressed with how our team has responded with advice and support. We’ve just completed Zoom meetings with our teams across most provinces, and staff are consistently reporting how proud they are to work for CFIB at this critical time. I’m sorry that it appears your pay expectations were not met. The District Manager job is not always an easy one and needs to be treated as a full-time role. While things were particularly challenging over the past year (due to the need to contact business owners virtually for several months), I am proud to report that nearly 15,000 small business owners made the decision to buy a paying membership during the pandemic. With the unprecedented awareness and interest in CFIB, this certainly helped us attract new members despite the challenging economic times. While serving our members is our main focus, our entire senior management team is committed to making CFIB a great place for staff to work and earn a good living. I believe we do a really solid job of that, but I am always looking for input from current (and former) staff along the way. Thanks for writing.
