Pros

- office is located in the Back Bay; if you like expensive salads and no lunch spot variety, it's great - small office (we're beginning to outgrow the space and now some of us are working out of a bar below the office) - very little social interactions - zero-distraction environment - homogeneous consulting team (it's almost like living in a frat house again - we only look at applicants from 3 schools - Tufts, Brown and Wellesley) - no micro-management (CEO is never in the office)

Cons

- CFO was recently indicted - reptutation with all clients suffered big-time - lack of project variety - I have spent the last 12 months doing tech DD (with very few breaks) - Senior team members average 60 years of age and are out of touch with modern technology, yet they drive most of the content and recommendations we deliver to our clients who are trying to make top quartile returns from modern software investments - talent development function is a mess - they recently realized that there are too many senior associates looking to be promoted to manager soon, so they just added a new title between senior associate and manager - too many admin staff - recently hired hospitality manager and two other folks that increase overhead / reduce bonus pool - CEO just wants to sit back, but collect most of the EBITDA - several people have heard him say "I want top talent, but I don't want to pay top dollar for it" - CEO is ruthless once you're on his bad side - recently started neglecting and drove his entire US banking team to exit the firm; also lost top consulting performers due to suspicious circumstances - I guess that behavior shouldn't surprise you since he's a cousin of Whitey Bulger's - Nepotism - CEO has a history of hiring his friends and keeping them around despite several team members pointing out their poor performance - Bad hires in key positions - half of consulting managers / directors group does not understand work streams of commercial and tech DD - as a result they're often not contributing anything to the progress of a project, but are merely hovering over the project team

Pros

- Fantastic first job out of college. Consulting projects give exposure to a variety of technology companies and sectors. Associates are given high visibility and responsibility from day one. - Working closely with the Executive Partners (senior consultants) is one of the best parts of the job. They are experienced tech entrepreneurs who have been CEOs, CTOs, CIOs, of various technology companies throughout their career. A new grad joining a bigger firm would likely not get a chance to meet and work with this caliber of executives. - Class of Associates is made up of incredibly smart, driven people. Most of who will certainly be life-long friends. - My experience at Bulger was rich and clearly differentiated from others at my career stage. I learned so much in my 3 years at the firm and those learnings have made my transition into the tech world seamless.

Cons

- Given I was part of one of the first class of Associates, many of the benefits I enjoyed, for example the rotation program between Banking and Consulting, don't exist anymore. - Learning curve is steep but flattens quickly at ~1-2 years on the job as dynamic staffing can get you stuck on the same type of projects (with the same team) for a while. - Culture, and certain personalities, can be overwhelming for more reserved / quieter individuals.
