Identity crisis, not product-led - Product Management Blueprint Test Prep Employee Review

Pros

Like other ed-tech companies, there's a more rewarding connection to users - as learners - than other SaaS companies offer

Cons

Blueprint is having an identity crisis. A clear focus on what the core product value is has been diluted and lost with acquisitions - too many, too fast, and with poor integration strategy. There's no clearer signal that the company is not product-led than hiring, and then firing, a head of product before she even reaches a year. I'm not sure what kind of company the exec team wants to run - is it about live instruction, with top-quality tutors? Or a mediocre question bank competing against hundreds of better-funded MedEd companies with big-name SMEs and more robust platforms? By trying to do everything, we end up accomplishing very little. Two rounds of layoffs in a single year, with today's having deep cuts in engineering - entire teams vanished. How will we achieve our goals without the specific team members able to create what it is we try to sell?

Pros

Flexible at-home work, great colleagues, sound learning platform. I also really love my boss.

Cons

Since instructing/tutoring is part-time, there are no health benefits etc.

Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s wonderful to know that you enjoy the flexibility of remote work and feel connected to your team and leadership. While we don't offer medical benefits for employees who work part-time hours, we do work to support through other avenues, including access to our Employee Assistance Program and a 401(k) match.

Pros

Some really great people, and the founders definitely wanted to create a fun environment when they started out

Cons

At the end of the day I'm sure it's fine for a lot of people but, basically as the years went by it's fallen apart. No direction. No identity of what the company is or should be was ever communicated. Then they fired everyone save for bare bones marketing and engineering teams. They've spent probably millions on at least 3 rebranding attempts over 5+ years, none of which has seen the light of day. It's owned by private equity and ever since they went fully remote in 2020, it's become increasingly splintered where basically your entire day is trying to figure who might be the right person to talk to or what the right platform / product (essentially which test account) is going to show you what the status is of thing you're trying to improve. You may or may not hear back from the person you need to talk to... meanwhile you're stuck looking at a page that won't load because you're browser has cached there wrong staging or prod user session. Logging in (or attempting to log in) to various staging and production platforms literally took up 35% of my day if not more. There is no product team anymore, it's one person and the CEO, who I guess you have to volunteer to impress in order to get ahead? He buddies up to someone like a new CMO or whoever it might be, then realizes they aren't turning things around, then fires them. "Unlimited" vacation offered which almost everyone was too afraid to take.

We appreciate you taking time to write a review. Over the years, Blueprint has grown in an ambitious way as we’ve expanded into new product lines. We recognize that our dynamic and fast-paced environment is not for everyone, and navigating that type of growth in a remote model requires continuous adjustment. Ensuring our teams can collaborate effectively across multiple platforms remains a main focus for us, which is why we are heavily prioritizing cross-functional awareness and training. We’ve also launched a company-wide culture refresh project specifically focused on bringing awareness to how we support our learners and ensuring everyone has clarity on our products. Regarding our unlimited vacation policy, flexibility is consistently highlighted as a top benefit in our internal engagement surveys; however, if any team members ever feel hesitant to utilize it, we always encourage them to come forward to the People Team.
