Pros

Blooom is a much needed service and is trying to do great things. And there are some amazingly dedicated people who work very hard to achieve blooom's goal of helping people retire.

Cons

Blooom just laid off eight people today and its president quit. It is going through massive changes since it completed raising it money. Those fired included people who had been with the company since almost the very beginning to those just recently hired. It also included someone that had relocated their entire family to Kansas to take this job. They have implemented new "voluntary" work hours where they ask the employees to work in the evenings.

Thank you for the feedback. As a start-up we face challenges and changes on a daily basis. We are always learning and doing what we can to get better at what we do. We make no excuses for mistakes made along the way. We admit our imperfections. We hear what our clients are saying and what our team is saying. We not only hear them but we are taking action. In reference to your concerns mentioned above, we made decisions to pause on a couple of longer term projects to allow us to put all of our focus and energy on our direct to consumer growth. This decision meant that we would also have to impact jobs. There are real people involved and it’s painful. We made this decision now to keep us from ever having to make that decision again. There are no guarantees in a start-up but we are working hard to continue to improve and make a difference in the lives of our clients and the lives of our team.

Pros

Blooom has brought together some very passionate and talented people that not only care deeply about the mission, but are also well equipped to contribute in many ways to the company's success. Blooom is uniquely positioned to benefit from shifts in the investment advice industry because of its focus on leveraging technology to reach the masses at a low cost. It's an exciting place to work and employees have unique and wide-ranging opportunities to contribute that are hard to find, even in the start-up community.

Cons

Blooom has been through many ups and downs since beginning in 2014. Leadership changes and layoffs rattled the culture several times and those of us that have been around for a while have certainly learned an invaluable number of lessons along the way. One of the biggest drawbacks of working for any small business is uncertainty. In a fast-paced environment like blooom, it can be hard for some to communicate, maintain transparency, and deal with the constant, often sudden changes, but finding the right people that can embrace change and the risk of the unknown, along with leadership's improved transparency in the last 6 months, has helped and should continue to quite a bit. Blooom's future looks bright.
