My experience at AppFolio started off great but ended horribly. I survived two rounds of layoffs, constant gaslighting, and repeated exposure to client abuse with little to no support from leadership. What was once a company built on empathy and transparency has turned into a toxic environment full of favoritism, fear, and manipulation.
Leadership at multiple levels lacks accountability and emotional intelligence. Concerns are ignored, retaliation is subtle but real, and promotions are based on who you know, not the quality of your work. The culture has become performative, especially around “inclusion” and “feedback.” They’ll ask for it, but they won’t listen to it.
There’s an unhealthy obsession with being “innovative,” to the point where it kills productivity and morale. They constantly roll out new software tools, tracking systems, and “efficiency” initiatives that micromanage and overwhelm employees instead of helping them. To the point to where you can’t even leave your work desk AT HOME, to grab a drink of water etc. More time is spent on making the employees live a living hell than actually serving the client, which completely defeats the purpose. It’s innovation for the sake of optics, not impact.
There’s also an unrealistic fixation on hitting perfect KPIs instead of focusing on genuine client satisfaction ..and most clients aren’t satisfied, largely due to constant price increases, software issues and lack of access to customer support. Clients are overcharged, employees are underpaid, making the rich richer!!!! No one that works at Appfolio has a healthy work life balance.. NO ONE!
There are incredibly talented, hardworking people at AppFolio who genuinely care about customers and each other, but they’re
overworked, undervalued, and unsupported. If you’re thinking of applying, read more employee reviews and do your research. What they sell publicly about culture and growth absolutely DOES NOT match the internal reality.
