The people team - worst management ever! - People Team AO Employee Review

Pros

The events can be alright, but if you work on the people team it's all forced fun. You HAVE to attend the events otherwise it's highly frowned upon. Or you will receive a phone call and be asked why you're not attending. So even if it's your weekend and it's an event you're not interested in, you must work it and you're never paid the time back.

Cons

Where do I start? No one on the team is happy. Everyone at some point has looked for another job. All the "fun" that is plastered all over social media is done for the benefit of external people or other departments. No one on the team is having fun when they're being forced to work events or after work hours with no pay. Salary is nowhere near competitive with the rest of the market. They will continue to add to your responsibilities but when it comes to your pay review, they'll always say no. They brag about internal promotional but that's only so they can pay you less than what they'd pay someone external. And it takes years of working hard to only hear a petty reason in the end why you're not promotion material. Again, this isn't just me but the opinion of the majority on the team. If you're not a parent, not many of the company benefits apply to you. You can't turn to HR about any of the management problems because their head of department is your head too and their loyalty lies with her. There's so much politics on the team. If you arrive to work at 8:50 you're seen to have no drive. Or if you leave on time, managers question why you're leaving on time. Even if you have kids to go home to. If you don't work events, you're seen as a bad egg. If you're seen to be having too much fun while chatting to your mates, it's immediately pointed out or even bought to your attention in a meeting as unprofessional behaviour. When senior management will often have a laugh with other managers, they'll always be shopping online, they'll work from home whenever they want and leave the office whenever they wish.

We take pride that our culture is what makes the difference, but it is not for everyone. People at AO are treated as individuals; this provides flexibility and we empower our people so they do the right thing for our customers. We reward our people with flexible benefits and fair salaries for the job they do, but its beyond that; we can’t pay people to care. We are obsessive about developing our own people, we give them the tools, process and support to become their best. Many of our leaders are ‘home grown’ talent and this is something we will continue to invest in. We create great events, experiences and activities for our AO’ers; it’s just a small thank you for those that bring our values to life every day, making us, us…its never forced, it’s just what we do. AO’ers are on a mission to be the Best European Electrical Retailer in Europe, we are focused on achieving this, and all done with a smile on our face, as we change the world of retail.

Hey there - we think you may have left this review by mistake! We're the UK's most trusted electrial retailer, based out of Bolton, Greater Manchester. You might want to find the other 'AO' that are based in the States and leave your kind words there for the right company. All the best!
