I have been working at EllisDon (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - exposure to interesting high profile jobs where you are always learning
    - chance to work with some of the industries higher end trades
    - flexible with vacation
    - Lots of room to move up within the company
    - Upper management is very transparent with the companies goals and objectives, including financials

    Cons

    - Some long time employees are stuck in the old generation of contracting (ie not accepting of technology to aid the project, negative attitudes towards helping subcontractors)
    - easy to get lost in the shuffle if you don't speak up due to the size of the company
    - no real say in which project you get put onto if you're in the field. They don't take into account where you or others live to try and minimize travel time to work

    Advice to Management

Continue to be involved in the smaller levels of the company. Lots of young fresh employees are unsure of how to advance in the company

I have been working at EllisDon full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-They pay well compared to other companies
    -Flexible with vacation time
    -Generally look after their employees
    -Safe place to work

    Cons

    -Unorganized at times
-Lack tools or material needed for tasks quite often

    Advice to Management

-Try being more proactive than reactive when coordinating a schedule (pulling workers from tasks over and over just wastes time and effort moving around)
-Employees don't like constantly having to scrounge for material or tools to do what they are asked
-The culture of sticking to schedule regardless of common sense frustrates employees and sub trades, it usually ends up with work being done over or being damaged and is a waste of time and money

I worked at EllisDon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible, and willing to promote within.
    3 weeks vacation to start.
Decent salary and benefits are great.
    Company holds team building events.

    Cons

Tough to get messages across to upper management.
Pay isn't as good compared to other companies.
Some of the long time superintendents aren't willing to teach newer ones.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the new employees rather then long term ones that may have become complacent.

I worked at EllisDon (More than a year)

    Pros

You can make great money in the right position.

    Cons

Generally my experience at EllisDon was poor.

They are an Ontario based company that belongs in Ontario. The company has a well deserved and dubious reputation in the west.

They don't pay their sub-trades on time which has affected their ability to conduct business. They like to comment about how much money they have in the bank. Not paying on time is major source of interest income.

They like to try to lure top talent from other companies with the promise of high pay, as was my case. If they approach you run, it will not end well. They are mostly trying to recruit you in order to glean information and contacts in order to send someone from Ontario to replace you.

The senior executive manage by authority as opposed to leadership qualities. They are contract managers and accountants and their mentality of bullying subtrades and employees, seems to be the normal course of business.

They have had several high profile projects end poorly with many companies that has affected their ability to do business. In turn they tend to attract management in Alberta with dubious reputations.

    Advice to Management

Do what you say you are going to do and be forthright.

I have been working at EllisDon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of great and hardworking coworkers. Everyone wants to do their best. The work is interesting and their is a 9-5 culture. They don't expect you to work insane hours (unless you're on a deadline).

    Cons

Lots of useless upper management. Many of them are scrambling to position themselves to take over for the current CEO, but it's easy to see that he's not going anywhere for the next 10-15 years. This means too much time is spent on office politics and not enough time is spent on making sure great work is getting done.

Leaders only oriented to please corporate.
HR gets on the way of business initiatives.
    Too focused on social media.
    Weak PM system.

    Pros

ummmm......has profit sharing, but sadly it's so convoluted and rules change annually, you never see a dime. Has typical medical benefits. Not the greatest benefits but they have it.

    Cons

    - Long hours,
    - no work-life balance, little consideration for life outside of work,
    - too much office politics and mind games, gossip / nosy coworkers,
    - long-term employees seem complacent and unambitious
    - fire the old, hire the young
    - Long hours,
    - poor communication,
    - poor business systems and information exchange,
    - poor coordination of effort,
    - lack of feedback and day-to-day management,
    - team building is neglected,
    - areas of responsibility are never clear
    - low salary
    - expected to work a lot of OT with no recognition and weekends
    - sexist
    - aegists
    - boy's club
    - no one is willing to teach or help
    - not tolerant with the employee in case of personal or health problems. You're fired!
    - Management is WEAK
    - too much favoritism and nepotism
    - totally not LGBT friendly. They harrass and fire anyone they think is gay
    - only bible-thumpers or fake bible-thumpers get promoted. Just pretend to be a devout Christian or devout corrupt Catholic and you will go places.
    - ED upper management so white
    - no room for advancement
    - bullies
For the reasons sated above, maybe that's why all your BC projects are failing and behind schedule. BC management is non-existent. Fail to know their employees and what their strengths are. Show some sincere appreciation for the overworked staff and weed out the biggest trouble-maker, your executive assistant.
Gate 3 is a joke. Construction companies should not develop software. 10 years in the making and it's still not working well. How about you re-jig that entire IT department. Poor communication out East, hence the money-drain in that department and lack of a well-oiled IT wheel..
