Pros

Remote work - There is a trust that you will get your work done while having channels for collaboration. Culture - I appreciate the core values around humility and cognitive diversity. With a small team, there are a lot of opportunities to collaborate and figure out solutions to challenging problems that our customers face. Growth opportunities - You get to work on many different projects and touch different aspects of the software. Talented team - Lots of smart, humble individuals who can help with mentoring, but at the same time showing humility. Good medical benefits

Cons

Because it is a small company, there are a lot of things on each person's plate. However, there is a lot of room for personal and career growth that would be harder to get at a bigger company and the management team does a good job at making sure you take personal time off.

Pros

- Unlimited PTO - Fully remote - Talented engineers

Cons

- Was promised a pay raise when I was hired, management chose not to honor that. - The morning after completing a huge project I was laid off without warning, which put them in a terrible position of trying to support my tool without me. - Severe lack of empathy from management. - Completely disorganized and disconnected HR. - CEO and other executives tote that Element is a "family friendly" company but interruptions related to kids and other family matters were not tolerated and often used against you in negotiations. - Insane amount of meetings each week! - Constant pressure to do more from the executive team trickles down into a very contentious and toxic environment to work in.

I'm sorry to hear you were frustrated with your experience at Element. It’s always tough to read a review like this. We take every piece of feedback from our team members and alumni seriously and are always looking for ways to improve. I’d like to address the points you raised as best I can. We're a startup and must sometimes make difficult decisions which impact team members. These are unfortunate, but unavoidable. When these situations occur, our goal is to treat every impacted team member with dignity and respect and provide them with severance to ease their transition. Many of our team members are parents (myself included) trying to manage remote school and work during the pandemic. We understand everyone is doing the best that they can. Our managers have been actively working to accommodate people’s specific needs while ensuring we can still service our customers. This requires clear communication on both sides. We’ve had occasional missteps, but we’re committed to learning from those and improving. We would never hold the need to take care of family against one of our team members. This goes against our values. We outsource HR and I know it’s sometimes confusing as to who handles what. We’ll continue to work on improving communication and providing a more connected experience for the team. As a startup, our business model and customers are constantly evolving. That’s why there is pressure to move quickly and at times, a lot of meetings to make sure the team is aligned. While we encourage healthy and respectful debate, we have zero tolerance for a toxic or contentious work environment. Over the last few months, we’ve developed a business model that we think will be more stable over the long term. Last year we established a modern work taskforce to help us understand how we can communicate more efficiently and reduce meetings across the board. All a work in progress, but things we are focused on. Thanks again for taking the time to let us know about your experience. I wish you all the best with your future endeavors.
