Pros

Very few. Some training although usually irrelevant to your role. Work experience.

Cons

A very very poor company to work for. Basically echo the views of similar poor reviews of this company. Especially as a “trainee”, the pay is minimal at £17500. Trainees can be experienced professionals familiar to office/work environment or school leavers. No matter how much work or progress or money you make the company, you will receive the minimal standard 6 monthly pay rise of £500. They will string you along and tell you that if you provide evidence you will be “fast tracked”. This is blatantly untrue and the management will never deviate from this standard pay scale. Once you have signed up as a trainee you are contractually obligated to pay back £3500 if you leave the company within the first 6 months of employment. If you leave between 6 months and 12 months; you pay back £700. It is claimed that the cost of the training however in my experience I received no training as a trainee. They claim to be a very people orientated company which was the main appeal to me about the company. Unfortunately you realise very quickly you are a cheap resource who’s only job is to get as many billable days in for the company as possible. After (minimum) 3-6 months for trainees with no experience in the industry prior to working with Edge, you are then advertised to clients as an experienced software tester unbeknownst to the client. Career advancement is not applicable. If you feel you have achieved all you can on a particular client site or project your request to further your skills elsewhere is ignored. The only time any senior employee will get in touch with you is when you haven’t sent in your timesheet or when you hand in your notice. When you are on client site and are asked to attend management meetings or mandatory Quarterly meetings, these are on your own time. This is not the case with other vendors but does seem like Edge will agree to client demands over wishes or well being of employees. As a permanent member of staff you will not be paid if you are sick for between 1-3 days. More than 3 days you will be paid statutory sick pay. This is not disclosed at the interview stage. You get all the drawbacks of contracting with none of the benefits. Pension is also extremely poor. I can only speak of my own experience with this company and could never in good faith recommend that you work directly for this company. The pretence of an employee friendly work place when on client site and the untruths you are told regarding low employee turnover are particularly disappointing. I feel it is important for anyone applying to work for this company to be aware what employees of the company have experienced.

We are disappointed that Edge did not meet up to your expectations as an employer and we would like to address some of your comments. Edge Academy Edge are proud of our Edge Academy scheme and our Investors in Young People Gold Award. At Edge we aim and offer our trainees attractive long-term opportunities. We believe it is appropriate that graduate programmes have a financial tie in as it can be costly for companies to train individuals only to lose them before their new skills can be utilised and impact the investment in programmes in the future. Additionally, unlike many other graduate and training schemes Edge pay a salary from day one of employment and not after the completion of training. Around 30% of trainees have fast-tracked a graduated earlier than the 2 years as they demonstrated exceptional skills, motivation and positive behaviours both within Edge and with our clients. We also have invested time and effort in our career framework which is available to all staff to help give direction to progress their career. This is supported by a career mentor where a colleague is available to discuss objectives and aspirations. Sick Pay We have a sick pay policy an extract is below (which is also in your contact of employment): We have a contractual sick/injury pay scheme which, on completion of a successful probationary period, provides payment during periods of certificated sickness for 20 days in any 12-month period. However, in line with SSP no payment of contractual sick/injury pay will be made for the first 3 days of any absence. For any certified sickness in excess of 20 days, you may be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay, providing you meet the eligibility criteria.

Pros

Co-workers are very nice and easy to get along with.

Cons

Everything about the company. Firstly, the company falsely market themselves a lot. They advertise Software Tester Training programme and state that the pay is competitive with no clause attached, which is incorrect. The pay for the training programme is £17500. They state you can get pay bump quickly if you do the work. That’s a lie no pay bump. If you ask for pay rise and give evidences for the reasons they plain say NO with no explanation. In addition, if you try to leave before 6 months, you pay them back £3500. If you leave after 6 months and less than a year; you pay back £600. They claimed that’s the cost of the training. There is absolutely no training. We sat is class for like a week doing nothing and a lot of questions asked in the training was not answered because the trainer was incapable. NOTE: when they put you on client site. They don’t put you on as a Trainee software tester. They put you on as Tester with 2 years experiences and client looking at you like why don’t you know this things? Secondly, career advancement is almost impossible. If you don’t suck up to the management; you are totally not getting promoted. So they have few Test Leads and that’s not because they are experienced or good at what they do. They only got promoted because they sucked up to the management. In addition, they claimed there is ongoing training to staff members. They advertise training but when you apply for the training they don’t respond to your email. Furthermore, you are a money machine to them. So things like 1 to 1 meeting with your manager is done during your lunch break (which they do not pay for), Quarterly meeting, which apparently is compulsory and they don’t pay for is done during your personal time. Finally, I would advise stay away. I don ‘t think they will last anyway as one of their biggest client is slowly replacing them testers on site with another company due to the high staff turnover.

Thanks for the feedback, we regret that your experience in our Academy was not satisfactory in your opinion. Edge are proud of our Edge Academy scheme and our Investors in Young People Gold Award. Many of our trainees and their more senior colleagues quote the continued success of the scheme is down to strong mentorship and coaching, practical experience and continuous assessment. At Edge we try and offer our trainees attractive long-term opportunities and involve them in decisions about their future and direction of the company (this was part of the criteria for the Investors in Young People award). We believe it is right that graduate or trainee programmes have a financial tie in as it can be costly for companies to train individuals only to lose them before their new skills can be utilised and impact the investment in programmes in the future. Additionally, unlike many other graduate and training schemes Edge pay a salary from day one of employment and not after the completion of training. Edge offer fantastic opportunities for individuals who have a passion for testing to join a growing company and develop their skills. As our trainees’ experience grows and formal training is completed the salary increments do become greater. Around 30% of trainees have fast-tracked a graduated earlier than the 2 years as they demonstrated exceptional skills, motivation and positive behaviours both within Edge and with our clients.

Pros

Hmm, struggling here - they pay (basic salary) well for experienced test analysts. I was able to attend a couple of training courses which was useful.

Cons

No benefits, no flexibility, no communication, no career path, company doesn't listen to employees. Having said that, some of the criticism I see in other reviews (as well as my own) stem more from the business model than Edge per se. As a "consultant" you are always going to have the cons of being a contractor without the pros (higher income). However, with Edge you also don't get the benefits of being a permie that other similar companies offer - sick pay, transportation covered etc. As noted, I had access to some training but there is most definitely a lack of structure / planning for staff training.

In response to your comments, we would like to highlight the following points: Travel and Expenses We have a comprehensive expenses policy and we only deduct an allowance to cover a normal journey to work in line with HMRC rules. Otherwise, all out of pocket expenses for travelling to client site are reclaimable. Many organisations do not cover any expenses to an employees normal place of work. Training We offer a MINIMUM of 5 days training per year to our employees. Our training schedule and course catalogue is continually being updated and is based on research into needs of digital job roles, our clients and our staff’s personal development plans. We take feedback on internal and external courses and take action accordingly. We agree that in our haste to provide more training as quickly as possible to our employees and launch a more formal training process in 2018 there was some confusion around some procedures. We have reviewed, update and automated to make the process smoother in 2019. We had a payback agreement in place to recoup the cost of training should an employee leave within 12 months of receiving the training. It is not that unusual for employers to require employees to repay their costs of training or other professional fees that the employer has incurred on their behalf if they leave their employment. We were made aware that this troubled some employees and we changed the terms to only apply after a minimum of 5 days training was taken. Career Framework There is a career framework which is available to all staff to help give direction to progress their career. This is supported by a career mentor where a colleague is available to discuss objectives and aspirations.
