I have been working at Earnest full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - New, and necessary, sense of focus since management change
    - The company feels like it is on the right track again
    - Backing of Navient opens opportunities
    - Comp in $ instead of "equity"

    Cons

    - A lot of great people have left
    - Still organizational cleanup to do after a rough 2017
    - Some integration pains with Navient

    Advice to Management

Focus on being transparent and rebuilding trust that was lost in 2017

I have been working at Earnest full-time

    Pros

    - The atmosphere of the Salt Lake City office is very energetic
    - The work is interesting and there is a lot to learn
    - Competitive compensation
    - PTO is very generous, WFH is often an option
    - There is always something to work on, I am never bored
    - Horizontal organization, relatively easy to get in touch with exec's

    Cons

    - Health insurance for 2019 is very expensive
    - Understaffed
    - Getting more dependent on Navient

    Advice to Management

The servicing platform change in November was an absolute nightmare for both clients and employees. Exec's do not seem invested in solving the never ending problems associated with it. PLEASE do something to salvage what is left of employee morale and bring Earnest's values back.

I have been working at Earnest full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    *Communication access to upper management
*LOTS of perks (too . many to mention)
    *Convenient location (near TRAX)

Parking availability ( SLC keeps raising the parking fees)

Continue to provide easy communication and access to your employees despite the current purchase from Navient. Lets keep it a start up feel!

    Pros

Some of the best people I've ever worked with and worked for!
The best work/life balance in the industry.
Sweet office in the heart of Salt Lake City.
The benefit of actually doing something good for the world by saving people money.
    Free food!
    Seriously the food is amazing.
Great company Culture where they actually care about you.
    Tons of room for advancement.
Actually pays a living wage nowadays, and is proud to pay a living wage.

    Cons

Office in Downtown SLC has its own positives and negatives.

I have been working at Earnest full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance is excellent; hours are flexible, PTO is generous, and WFH is often an option.

Regular company events keep work fun
Company mission is actually meaningful—our work helps people save money on their student loans and get out of debt sooner.

Earnies are generally smart, nice people. I've made great friends here, and enjoy working with almost everyone at the company.

Compensation is generous (between base salary, 401K match, bonus, etc.) but you of course won't be hitting the stock option jackpot anymore.

    Standing desks!

    Cons

Office often doesn't have a lot of energy...lots of empty desks. But recent space consolidation should help.

The Navient acquisition has added red tape in many ways, and their cost-cutting approach has mean some compromises when it comes to delivering the best experience for our clients.

    That noisy refrigerator.

    Advice to Management

Reassure people that we still have a San Francisco startup heart, and are seeking to build beautiful products that are better than our competitors'.

Throw money at some amazing engineering talent.

    I worked at Earnest full-time

    Pros

    - Slow moving company, no real deadlines and work at your own pace
    - Good people have already left. So, not much to do.

    Cons

    - Pretty inexperienced engineering and product team. Still working on things as if it was 1999.
    - Engineering leadership is weak. Can't even assess good candidates during hiring. Several new hires leave in a few months after realizing the quality of work.
    - Extremely high turnover rate. New hires get little support.
    - Lot of deadwood that needs to be cleaned.

    Advice to Management

Hire engineering and product leadership that knows the craft. Current leadership is hired by CEO/COO who didn't know how to hire.

    I worked at Earnest full-time

    Pros

No pros. Worst place I've ever worked.

    Cons

    - Exec yelled at me in front of everyone for performing by basic job duties (which were mildly inconvenient for him)
    - My manager refused to allow me time off (both pre-scheduled and for family emergencies).
    - My team was extremely underresourced and unsupported by the rest of company.

Absolutely terrible morale company-wide -- about 10% of the company left voluntarily in the 2 months before I quit.
