I worked at DNEG (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting projects, generally great artists to work with.

    Cons

Management. They seem to reveal in breaking people down. Poor artist management. Below average wages.

    Advice to Management

Why so cold? Put people first, after all, we are the ones that do the work!

I have been working at DNEG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Amazing artists
    great environment
    cool projects
    Great and knowledgeable leads
    Opportunity to learn.

    Cons

    Management ignores artists
Management doesn't offer comparable payments in comparison to the competition.
If you are a junior this might make you feel like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place with a lot of work for little to no reward.
Little to no communication between management and artists.
When addressing an issue be prepared to be told to wait several weeks over and over again until you decide to quit.
    Weak renderfarm

    Advice to Management

    Value your artists.
Offer artists training during downtime that is during work hours and not outside working hours. ( you have no work for us, so train us so we can do more for the company when our department is missing in work).
    Stop ignoring your artists.
Your artists are people with feelings and problems and work doesn't help when it pays under the market value of the work your employees produce.

I have been working at DNEG full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Some friendly coworkers
    Regular pay
    Monthly events

    Cons

Pay is low compared to companies within the same space
Employees are either micromanaged or completely overlooked
Political and not a professional environment
Quite a cold environment despite lauding themselves as a "family company"

Do not provide the right tools to get the job done efficiently ie. old ineffective computers and software
A lot of time and skills wasted due to improper management and lack of resources to take care of employees and make their jobs easier

    Advice to Management

I have worked for a few studios and the DNEG environment feels contrived and cold. Outwardly, the company states that they are a family company while inside employees are made to feel undervalued and often disposable no matter the hours they put in and a positive work ethic they show.

DNEG is a notable VFX studio- the equipment, resources and tools should reflect that. By having the right software, tools, resources and management/training, employees would then be able to tackle problems smoothly instead of trying to solve issues that would not exist if the proper infrastructure was in place.

Many employees understand that idea of keeping a low profile and head down to hopefully move ahead or keep their contract. The industry is fairly recent and relies on innovation, so employees should feel safe and comfortable enough to voice concerns, ideas and improvements without management feeling like toes are being stepped on.
