Pros

The only pros are the issues you will work on.

Cons

Disorganized. No advancement opportunities unless you are willing to suck up to overpaid VPs. Lack of progressive policies for a so-called watchdog organization. Inappropriate actions by HR staff. Overall lack of communication between staff, and a dismissive attitude toward state chapters.

Good benefits. And the issues --- there is no other organization that works on these vital democracy reform with the kind of clout that Common Cause has.

Cons

Leadership at Common Cause is myopic. There is no room to grow. There are few (if any) opportunities to learn. They are constantly laying people off and hiring new staff and then laying those staff off -- so on and so forth. Staff are consumed by how miserable they are and all are constantly on the lookout for a better job. Also, you will be paid in pennies. Unless you are one of their overpaid VPs.

The state chapters - where the magic happens - offer mutually beneficial employment. I've been given a lot of opportunities here.

Cons

National organization is drifting from core message, and does not support state chapters enough (financially or otherwise). Budgets are extremely tight.
