I have been working at CivicPlus full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice office perks, colorful atmosphere, casual dress code.

    Cons

No work life balance, no clearly defined expectations, lack of singular voice from management, no accountability for upper management, no processes outlined and no organization. Basic things you would expect from a 15+ year old company are lacking. Still running like a 2 year old start up.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff. They are telling you what they need to succeed and no one listens.

I have been working at CivicPlus full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I am a fairly recent hire within 1 yr. It has been such a great experience so far. The hire process was smooth, all online, and they communicated very well. The company itself is very open and transparent with its employees. Coming from a company that wasn't this is very refreshing. They trust me to do my job and do not micro-manage my decisions. Most decisions I make and just report that I made them. Also, they have made a company stance towards a leadership and company development process and are actively working towards it.

    Cons

-The 90 company waiting period for benefits is a little long. But just my opinion.
-Only 15 days of PTO a year for vacation and sick time. Makes it a bit hard with kids. Do have the option to work from home on days but can still be hard to manage only 15 days for both.

I have been working at CivicPlus full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Supportive culture with a work hard, play hard atmosphere. Full of motivated and highly dedicated staff with lots of fun perks from standing and walking desks, to bagels and fruit most of the week, to free espresso drinks, soda and beer. The company events are also a really good time and way to get to know your peers as the company has gotten bigger. Everyone at CivicPlus, especially management, are incredibly open and accessible. Remote work is very flexible in most roles. Continuous company improvement and time for individual improvement is a strong focus. I've never been happier at a company and you'll have a hard time finding a better place to work.

    Cons

PTO could be better. Only 15 days paid time off received in a lump each year, 90 days from your start date and then on your anniversaries. If you have a major life event (e.g. major illness or a baby), all of the time must be used to leverage the Short Term Disability benefit, so many people use it all and don't have any for as many as 10 months. No additional sick/maternity/paternity leave can make starting a family more stressful. As a rapidly growing company, there are also sometimes sudden, big changes that can make work pretty intense , but usually only temporarily until everyone gets caught up.

    Advice to Management

Rethink PTO and Short Term Disability. Keep it up on the regular and open communication with Town Halls and Quarterly Department Meetings. You're great at it and it helps employees feel respected and engaged.

I have been working at CivicPlus full-time

    Pros

Very nice people, innovative work processes, collaborative, laid back, very nice corporate office with decent free snack and breakfast perks, good health insurance benefits (that kick in 3 months after employment). Good overall processes.

    Cons

HR department's overdone and overcomplex interview processes, painfully long survey for three references, tight/penny pinching spending policies, undermarket/too low salaries, weak 401k benefits and too few PTO days. Some redundant processes/initiatives. Growing pains around acquiring new companies and struggles with handling remote employees.

    Advice to Management

During a strong economy, to stay competitive and retain good employees, pay them what they are worth and understand the market salaries in all of your locations. Being too stingy with money will ultimately backfire on your reputation and slow down growth.

I have been working at CivicPlus full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Culture - employee perks - beer, wine, pop, bananas, donuts, activities, prizes, recognition, competitions, etc.

Pay - Pay is right where it should be - benefits - bonuses and commissions in certain positions.

Honor system - no time-clock punching

    Cons

Incredibly fast-paced environment - not necessarily a con for many people - but the pace is very difficult to describe to others. If you don't THRIVE in a constantly changing environment, CivicPlus is not for you.
Lots of hiccups when a company grows this fast - to be expected - nothing extreme here. Just growing pains.

    Advice to Management

Hire an onboarding team to take pressure off the individual departments tasked with training their coworkers full time while still meeting their normal deadlines/quotas/expectations.

I have been working at CivicPlus full-time

    Pros

CivicPlus has thoroughly succeeded in creating a group of individuals make work a pleasant (or at least neutral), empowering experience. If you've ever worked at a company with a toxic culture you'll know the value of having a good company culture. People are generally engaged in their jobs and truly willing to function as a team.

Another pro is the stage of the company's lifecycle - there are a lot of new things happening at CivicPlus. The company still has a little bit of the startup feel, there are a lot of things that need to be built and enhanced. Great place to be an "intrapreneur."

    Cons

Salary is pretty underwhelming. It is a mistake to make a career move based on salary alone, but at least know that your salary potential will likely be capped at CivicPlus.

Management has a belief that increased salaries don't drive employee engagement, therefore high salaries are not worth the cost to the company. It also seems that the company gives fringe benefits as a way to help keep people satisfied with their salaries - e.g. gigantic break room with lots of drinks/stuff, large company Christmas party.

There is also a stated belief that the cost of living in Manhattan KS is significantly less than other places - but the truth is that it depends on the comparison. One could live in some areas of Kansas City for about the same as in Manhattan, and nationally the cost of living in MHK is close to the median.

It seems more common than normal to hear about people leaving for higher pay, e.g. one individual in a specialized technical role, who was invaluable to the company, left for an overnight 100% pay raise.

However, I suspect that there is a large degree of variation in the salaries at CivicPlus, and management seems to listen to reason (moreso than other executives that I've worked with). Negotiate wages if you get an offer and let them know that salary is something that incentivizes you.

Another con could be the "startup" feel of CivicPlus. If you like having all of your responsibilities clearly defined and instructions handed to you, you'll hate it here, but if you're someone who likes to take their own initiative and manage their own responsibilities you'll like it here. It depends on what you want.

The company is objectively understaffed, which means that people end up having a bazillion things on their plate.

    Advice to Management

The best employees are probably going to be interested in making a lot of money and less interested in the frills. It is a mistake to lose high-quality people due to differences in salaries - the best people are hard to find (not to mention convince to move to MHK) and worth the cost. With some employees a pay raise should be viewed as an ROI calculation and not an added cost to justify and budget in.

    Pros

    THE PEOPLE
    Involvement in the community
    Casual Office environment
    Fun, social opportunities and events

    Cons

    Out-of-touch leadership team
Limited opportunity for growth & limited income potential
Constant changes and improvements to mimic whatever the latest and greatest business strategy book is being read by the leadership team
Revolving door of Marketing and Sales Leadership

    Advice to Management

Although social recognition and fun celebrations are great, the only way to truly keep loyal and hard working employees for more than 3-5 years is to pay them what they are worth!

Great benefits, great people, decent pay for the area.

    Pros

    - Openly welcomes constructive feedback.
    - Constantly growing and evolving.
    - Positive culture and atmosphere.
    - Great location, pay and benefits.
    - Upward mobility available.

    Cons

    - There is definitely a learning curve, make sure that you are bringing a positive attitude and a desire to learn, and you will be fine; but you have to learn.

    Advice to Management

Everyone is very open to change, and I know that change takes time and many things need to be considered, but sometimes it feels like the changes could be accelerated a little more easily than it is.

    Pros

Pay is fine. Leadership is very interested in growing the company which will provide continued promotions if your willing to put the time and effort in. Working in the public sector is very rewarding.

    Cons

At this point, no stock options are on the table for employees.
