Cons

Intense academic environment: Caltech is known for its rigorous academic programs and demanding workload. The high expectations and pressure to produce exceptional work can sometimes lead to stress and work-life imbalance. Limited focus areas: While Caltech is renowned for its scientific research, it may not offer as broad a range of disciplines compared to larger universities. If you are interested in fields outside the sciences or engineering, the opportunities may be relatively limited. Competitive atmosphere: Due to the highly talented pool of researchers and students, competition can be intense at Caltech. It may require a strong drive and dedication to stand out and secure resources for your research. Expensive living costs: Caltech is located in Pasadena, California, which is known for its high cost of living. Housing, transportation, and other expenses may be higher compared to other areas, which can impact your overall financial situation. Limited teaching opportunities: If you enjoy teaching and mentoring, you may find limited opportunities at Caltech compared to universities with a stronger emphasis on undergraduate education. The primary focus at Caltech is often on research, which may reduce the availability of teaching roles.

Pros

Good salaries, many nice and helpful people. Pretty campus, flexible schedules and decent benefits. Divisions are all different and have unique cultures.

Cons

Research dominates and staff is treated like second class citizens. Systemic morale and ethics issues. Management and HR are not interested in changing or improving the workplace.

Pros

Naturally beautiful campus with a serene feeling. Most people here, especially in the HR department, are likeable.

Cons

The company ignored years of complaints about a toxic manager. Had to quit when I realized how much it was affecting my sleep and leading to issues such as hypertension and heart palpitations. A year of homelessness later and I would still do it again just to get away.
