We are seeking an experienced and passionate Woodworking Instructor / Program Developer on behalf of an esteemed private school in Surrey, BC. This is a unique opportunity for a skilled tradesperson, educator, carpenter, cabinetmaker, or woodworking professional to develop and lead a hands-on woodworking program for middle and high school students.
The successful candidate will play a key role in establishing the woodworking shop, developing curriculum, teaching students safe woodworking practices, and fostering creativity, craftsmanship, and practical life skills.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development
- Design and develop a woodworking curriculum for students in Grades 8–12.
- Create engaging, project-based learning opportunities.
- Develop lesson plans, project guides, and assessment criteria.
- Foster creativity, problem-solving, and craftsmanship.
Shop Development & Management
- Assist in planning, organizing, and setting up the woodworking shop.
- Recommend equipment, tools, materials, and safety systems.
- Establish shop procedures, maintenance schedules, and safety protocols.
- Manage inventory and ensure equipment is maintained in safe working condition.
Instruction & Student Engagement
- Teach students the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery.
- Demonstrate woodworking techniques including measuring, cutting, joinery, assembly, sanding, and finishing.
- Supervise student projects and shop activities.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
Safety Leadership
- Ensure compliance with all safety requirements and best practices.
- Conduct safety training and equipment orientation sessions.
- Monitor shop activities and enforce safe operating procedures.
- Promote a strong culture of safety and responsibility.
Qualifications
- Experience in woodworking, carpentry, cabinetmaking, millwork, furniture making, industrial arts, trades instruction, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of woodworking tools, machinery, shop operations, and safety procedures.
- Experience teaching, coaching, mentoring, or training youth is considered an asset.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and help build a program from the ground up.
Preferred Qualifications
- BC Teaching Certificate (not required).
- Red Seal Carpenter, Cabinetmaker, Joiner, or related trade certification.
- Occupational First Aid certification.
- Experience working in schools, training centers, apprenticeship programs, or youth programs.
- Experience establishing or managing a woodworking shop.
