Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) Interview

      Feb 9, 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at goTenna in Dec 2022

      Interview

Received an email from them a few days after applying. They scheduled a video call. It went pretty well. I interviewed with someone in charge of the QA team, this was exactly 1 week after the initial interview(the soonest they could make it happen). It went fine as well, they told me I seemed to be a good fit, even though there were some tools I had never implemented in my previous experiences, they still said that it would not be an issue because this company is happy to teach them, they enjoyed the conversation with me and loved my approach and what I am doing in my current role. They insisted they would give the candidate some time to get used to the environment and they wanted someone who is willing to learn their implementations and that the most important thing is the "hunger" to continue learning and excitement about the role and that my profile seemed to be an excellent fit! Next step was to interview the technical team for 3hrs total. Perfectly fine, two newer members in the team and one senior. I received two coding task(I had been told in the second interview that they don't do assessments) I still got it , which was fine. I solved both , the interviewer gave me his approach for one of them, which I appreciate (doesn't mean my approach was incorrect). I was asked some behavioral questions. The conversation was smooth, nothing too complicated. I provided answers to all the questions and the interviewer seemed to be happy with my answers. I was asked questions about terminal and linux, I do not have much experience with linux. However, I still said I would be more than happy to educate myself, read, watch some educational videos and learn the work flow. The interviewer mentioned that would not be an issue at all, he jus wanted to know if I was familiar with it . It was not on the job descriptions. Another team member asked questions regarding how my communication with the development team is. Over all, very easy questions and I felt confident with my performance. The recruiter asked me to provide an update about how the interview went. I provided my feedback right after the interview and I did not receive a reply, which was ok. 4 days later I messaged the them to ask around how long it would take for them to continue with the hiring process, etc. The developer had mentioned to me that I was going to be contacted the next day because they were going to have a meeting to talk about myself and provide a feedback to the recruiter. Anyway, 4 days later I asked for an update and I was ignored. Fine... From the beginning when I was first contacted by this company, their messages were in the spam folder so 9 days after not hearing back from them I messaged them again kindly. At this point I had a job offer which I was hesitating wether to take it or not because this company was offering decent benefits. I was ignored again... 12 days later, the I was messaged to let me know that they had moved forward with another candidate. Nobody ever acknowledged the fact that they said "We will have a meeting and they will contact you tomorrow" , and they didn't , nobody said anything about my messages that were not answered. Alright, great! I know how to take no for answer but since it seemed like everything went so great and "my cons were that I was not familiar with some tools", then I asked about the other similar position they had been opened 3 days earlier, which was probably a better fit according to them based on my profile. They said the position pays less, and Let me know if you have questions". I did say I might still be interested (honestly, they were offering a good benefit package) the offer I had with another company was Hybrid and this company, fully remote. So yes, I was interested in that and their product sounds very amazing to me! Of course that person never responded either ... To me, the communication was not the best. I found it not very professional to "ghost" that way. It doesn't hurt to mention it and apologize for the delay and for ghosting for 12 days. I am fully aware the interview process can take long but that is not how you do this, you need to communicate that from the very beginning and if someone reaches out, the right thing to do is to get back to them, at least to tell them that the application is still being considered or something. Then, the fact that I showed interest for the role that requires a bit less of "experience" and still they made zero effort to answer to me...

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - Mostly about your current project. Nothing too technical! The few technical questions were very easy and the two coding tasks were not as hard either.
