      Engineering Manager Interview

      Dec 14, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Berlin
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at commercetools (Berlin) in Nov 2021

      Interview

First, credit where it's due – the recruiter was a pleasure to work with. She was always professional and provided quick follow-ups. The process involves 6 stages – 1. Recruiter Screening 2. Interview with 2 of their current EMs 3. A round with a couple of Tech Leads 4. Interview with a Product Manager & Agile Coach 5. A conversation with HRBP & CTO 6. A round with the team you'll be managing All of them ask you mostly the same questions, with the exception of CTO where how you offer salaries to your hires takes the centre stage. This would become relevant later in the review. After all the rounds, the recruiter schedules a call and gives you an offer. I asked for a follow-up call with the CTO because I was unsure about the company and him in general. During the follow-up call, I asked him a few questions around the future of the team and the company and couldn't find a grand vision. From what I could gather, they're mostly looking to stay #1 and keeping their team stable, with no concrete vision of the future. Based on my research and the uninspiring conversation with the CTO, I decided to ask for a higher salary than what was initially offered, which was still well within the industry standards and not too far off from what was offered. The CTO got extremely offended and decided to rescind the offer and accused me of being greedy and asking for more money now that I know that commercetools has it. The recruiter tried to jump in to fix the situation, but the damage was already done. Both of them gave me contradictory information on how they decided on the salary. Never have I ever heard that an offer could be revoked once it has been made for any reason whatsoever, let alone negotiating a salary that's a *little higher* than what was offered – something that's quite a standard in any industry. Even glassdoor doesn't have a category for rescinded offer! Seems to me, they're looking for smart people who are clueless about the market and are dumb when it comes to negotiating salary. Overall, a terrible experience & can only recommend staying away.

Thank you for your open and honest feedback about your interview experience. We take such feedback very seriously, and use it for continuous improvement. We are thrilled that your Talent Acquisition Manager was a stellar resource for you. Our TA team aims to deliver a positive & transparent candidate experience - consistent guidance & communication throughout the process is something which we place at highest level on our scale of priorities. This is why it was difficult for us to read about your feelings of disappointment during your interview process. Part of that high priority mentioned above is to give candidates clear expectations on salary from the beginning. Taking into consideration: internal and external job family alignment, and the level of overall impact and reach for this position, we as negotiating parties were not able to reach a mutual agreement in this particular instance. Therefore the offer was rescinded - in accordance with civil code, under which both parties may withdraw from an offer. This is not in bad faith, rather a normal consequence of contract negotiations which do not find a mutual basis for acceptance by both parties. If you would like to discuss this with us further please reach out to us at employerfeedback@commercetools.com. We wish you all possible success in finding the position that best meets your expectations.

      Nov 19, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at commercetools

      Interview

Started with initial screening with recruiter followed by 5 more rounds. First with 2 engineering managers, second with 2 tech leads, third with an agile coach and a product manager, fourth with CTO and HR and fifth with the whole team. At this moment I am not sure why so many rounds since they all ask very similar question and some were quite the same. Must be that they do not take and pass the notes. Saying this because since I already communicated a lot on people topic in the first two rounds, I decided to present my knowledge about their product and its architecture as well as work methodologies, to the product manager and agile coach, which I tough would be a plus and show a wide specter of experience and serve for the better collaboration and cooperation for the common goal, it turned out it was an overlap and negative outcome. Overall most questions were based around managing very negative situations in the team and unfriendly people rather than visionary. I assume their culture is affected in a toxic state. It made me reconsider my application, though I was not a match anyways.
