      Software Engineer Interview

      Jun 24, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at YipitData (New York, NY) in Jun 2021

      Interview

The interview consists of multiple rounds which is fairly standard in the industry. I do appreciate the fact that they skip recruiter screen. First round is with someone from upper management who is essentially in charge of the team/department that you are applying for. This is a mostly behavioral interview as well as a very light screen to see if you are familiar with data work. Second round is the take home assignment; you get 24 hours to do this but they predict it will take you anywhere between 3-5 hours. For the take home assignment you are required to work with a very dirty dataset and are expected to write a function to answer the prompt question. There are more rounds after this but this is as far as I got. The take home assignment is what makes or breaks your candidacy for the software roles. They do not provide a rubric as to how you will be graded on the assignment. They also do not provide feedback (even though I specifically requested some regardless if I passed or fail) on how you did on the assignment. If you did not pass; all you will get is an email stating: "Unfortunately, we have decided not to proceed with your candidacy for the XYZ role at YipitData. We received many qualified applicants and have decided to move ahead with another candidate who we feel is a better match for this particular position." As you can see this isn't useful at all in gauging your current skillset and what you need to improve on. @Yipitdata I understand you potentially have hundreds of applicants for 1 role and that writing a detailed feedback for every one of their assignments is not very feasible. However if you are going to have your candidates do an assignment (especially a relatively time intensive one); either provide them with a rubric (so they know exactly what is required for a passing score), or give back the assignment they submitted with markups on it from the reviewing engineer.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

One of the questions: What is a good manager to you? (Wasn't really expecting the first round to have this question)

Thank you so much for your candid and detailed feedback! At YipitData we strive to deliver excellent candidate experience and we sincerely apologize for missing the mark on this one. We understand the amount of time and effort that goes into the take-home exercise so we can feel your frustration on not receiving enough detailed feedback on your assignment. We have mentioned this to our hiring/grading team and reiterated the importance of feedback in this situation. If you could please send us an email at Recruiting@yipitdata.com, we will be sure to provide more detailed feedback to you. In the meantime, we will continue to strive to improve our process and ensure that all candidates feel valued for their time and effort in our process regardless or the final result of their candidacy. Thank you once again for your help, and we wish you only the best in your future endeavors! All the best, YipitData Recruiting Team

      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at YipitData in Dec 2022

      Interview

Interview consisted of an initial screening, another screening with one of the engineering directors, a take home assignment and a final round that had a pair programming interview and a behavioral interview. The whole process took around 4 weeks but this was due to my availability and could be quicker if needed. Overall, the process was pretty positive. Communication was great all around, interviewers were all nice and great to speak to. The recruiter also made sure I knew what to expect for each round and was quick to respond to any questions. The process was a bit lengthy but that is to be expected for similar SWE roles.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at YipitData (New York, NY) in May 2022

      Interview

I worked with a recruiter who was fantastic. Communication was quick - everyone was very responsive. The interview process is a bit lengthy, but ran smoothly. The process was: 1. Initial call with hiring manager 2. Take home assignment 3. Virtual on-site - one interview to discuss the take home project, another pair programming interview, and a final round of behavior questions. All told, about 4 hours. 4. Reference checks 5. Offer Ultimately I declined the offer because joining a start up at this time feels a bit risky. I also got the feeling that people here are stretched pretty thin. Everyone I spoke to was very nice, though.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How would you optimize the take home project? Talking through trade offs. Adding onto the functionality during a pairing session.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at YipitData (New York, NY) in May 2022

      Interview

      1. Initial call to introduce what the company does and the job description. They also reviewed my resume and past work experience. 2. Then received a take-home assignment that takes about an hour to complete but they gave me a week to submit. 3. First round pair programming: a review of the take-home assignment/extending the project. Finished with some behavioral questions. 4. Second round pair programming: further extending the take-home assignment. Finished with some behavioral questions. 5. Behavioral interview with three people 6. References check 7. Offer Everyone was super kind throughout the process and the pair-programming interviewers were realistic/nice. The whole process took about a month.
