I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Virtuous Software in Dec 2025
Interview
First a screening call with an internal recruiter. Second was a take home assessment. Third was a tech interview with three engineers from the company - super nice guys and really enjoyed the conversation. I thought this would be deeper dive into the assessment and architectural decisions, choices made and why, maybe even expand on some of it in real time; assessment wasn't even mentioned. No questions about the role itself either or questions related to the role. Just basic scenarios about how I handle explaining technically complex things to non-tech people, etc... Live coding was basically a 5th grade level math question that I choked and couldn't solve. I stand by my belief as a very experienced engineer that there are way too many rounds in software engineering roles and you're never truly prepared. Also, up to this point I had had a wonderful correspondence with an internal recruiter. Instead of her reaching out (as I am a big boy and I can handle it) - it was the standard, AI created email that they are pursuing other candidates.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Explain a complex technical problem or solution to someone who is not technical.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Virtuous Software in Apr 2022
Interview
Interview process was simple and straightforward. Allison was easy to communicate with and Adam the Technical Director was extremely straightforward and open. Both of them also have fun personalities.
1) Pre-screening with HR.
2) 1-1 with technical director. Mixture of technical and personality.
3) Take home tech assignment to design a simple donor portal.
4) Panel interview to go over the solution.
I also appreciated that the offer they made was a good and fair offer and they didn't try to lowball me. I didn't feel the need to negotiate the offer considering their openness about the salaries and their offer.
