      Product Manager Interview

      Mar 18, 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Vine (New York, NY) in Nov 2014

      Interview

2 phone screens, 1 video interview, 1 full day on site interview First phone screen was with the HR recruiter, mostly about my current role, what I was looking for in a role and team. Mostly culture fit, resume stuff. Second phone screen was with a PM there. Talked about what apps I used and why, examples of good design, who do I think competes with Vine etc. Third video interview was with the GM (head of Vine). Talked about what I was looking for in the product role, what I liked about Vine and where I saw the market going. All three screens were very casual. The onsite interview had six interviews 1. I had a prepare a quick 15 minute presentation on a product I liked, and ways I could improve it and measure its improvement. I also did a little speech at the start about myself, my background. Overall very nice, got a week to prep and it was very informal to the group of 5 people that would interview me. They had no questions. 2. First interviews was with the head of content and one of their designers. Very free form, asked me about apps I like, along with some general brainstorm (how would you design Vine for the tablet) type questions. 3. Creative Director: Very informal about the brand and origin of Vine. We talked about multiple directions Vine could take. He asked me how I viewed the role of PM in Vine etc. 4. CTO: This was mostly a personality screen. No technical questions, I asked about the engineering stack and process. I could tell this was purely a culture fit interview. 5. PM: The most formal interview. Asked about ways I measured success in previous projects, what I've shipped, if given x$ what company would I start. A mix of class PM/analytical questions and just culture fit. 6. GM: This was the most structured. Asked me how I would improve Uber, ways I would prioritize a given product backlog and another question which escapes me. Overall, the day was exhausting but everyone was awesome. Had a quick chat with the recruiter about what I thought and then I was on a plane that evening. The next day I was told they were going to pass, it wasn't the best fit at the time. Overall the process from e-mailing my friend to getting the no was less than three weeks. Everyone was really friendly and smart and I applaud the recruiter for moving really fast and giving me a decision immediately. It didn't work out but I think being a PM at Vine would be a lot a fun. Best of luck to them! My only negative feedback is that they had 6 back to back on site interviews with no lunch! I got really hungry :)
