      Product Designer Interview

      Jun 10, 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Lisbon, Lisbon District
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Unbabel (Lisbon, Lisbon District)

      Interview

"This company has a lot of red flags in there hiring process. First I applied and got a reply back for interviewing. I got a link to schedule a meeting through their system with a recruiter. I scheduled the meeting only for the recruiter to not show up. I email the recruiter who apologizes and says that there system did not put our meeting on their calendar which I found odd but was fine with it and we rescheduled for an hour later. I pass the recruiter call and was sent an email to prepare for my case study presentation. I present my case study. It was probably the worst interview I have ever gone through. The interviewer kept pointing out my inexperience and they kept projecting assumptions. The way they asked about my experience was degrading. The most odd question I got about my experience was because my title switched every company, what was my actual experience doing "product design". I have never been asked that question before in the years I have interviewed especially when my case studies and resume speak to doing product design. The biggest red flag was the description of the role did not match the role I was interviewing for. I was essentially going to be working for another startup is how they described it. They asked about my experience with product managing and what I thought of the intersection of product design and product managing which I found to be so odd. When I explained my experience and how it ranged from company to company, it felt like the interviewer was trying to one up me with their experience. They also knew about a company I worked for in the past and it felt like they were trying to flex their muscles on their knowledge about the company and their creative process despite not working there...it was really bizarre. Then when it was my turn to ask questions I did grill them about process, career development, accessibility and design systems. None of which I got a clear answer from the lead as it felt like the interviewer was fumbling her way through answers. The strangest thing is we went over time and the interviewer was answering my question, but then trailed off and said they had to run and awkwardly said that I could get my questions answered by......and then trailed off again. I awkwardly said it's fine that they can go to their meeting. It was probably the most awkward and terrible interview I have ever been through to where I resigned my application from the process. The interviewer needs mentorship on how to run an interview in a way that sets the candidate up for success even if the candidate is not the right fit. Not in a way that exposes the candidates gap of experience in front of other people. Unbabel needs to do better in their hiring process."

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Unbabel (Lisbon, Lisbon District) in Jan 2025

      Interview

I went through a three-stage interview process. Cultural Fit Interview: The first interview was a typical cultural fit conversation. It went well, and the interviewer was friendly and engaging. Case Study Presentation: In the second round, I had to present case studies of past projects. This interview also went smoothly—the interviewer was very approachable and helped create a relaxed atmosphere, which made the experience enjoyable. Whiteboard Challenge: The final stage was a whiteboard challenge with a developer, a product manager, and a product designer. The session was calm, and everyone in the room was kind and professional, making the experience less stressful than I expected. Overall, the process was well-structured, and the interviewers were welcoming and supportive throughout.
