      Senior Software Developer Interview

      Feb 19, 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Boulder, CO
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Trineo (Boulder, CO) in Mar 2019

      Interview

The first round was a quick chat with person in HR for culture fit. It was a pretty normal, high-level conversation about my previous work and Trineo culture. That led to an hour long interview with the CEO/CTO. He spent thirty full minutes talking about himself and the values at Trineo. He made interesting points and certainly demonstrated his passion for the company, but it was incredibly overwhelming and ended abruptly with quick-fire language specific trivia questions with two engineers. It was such a bizarre interaction and something that really turned me off to the organization. When the second round of interviewing a candidate includes c-level person who takes up the entire room, it's a good sign of what's to come down the road with leadership. They must have felt similarly about the fit- I received a rejection email the following day.

Firstly, we are grateful for your feedback. While we would certainly prefer a less anonymous version, we appreciate the time you have spent sharing your thoughts. We are disheartened that you had a negative experience, as it is the opposite of what we strive for. To that point, and to address some of your feedback, a unique part of our process (and ironically where we receive the most positive feedback) is for candidates to have a more upstream conversation with leadership to build that relationship and learn more about the company, culture, and our strategies. Said differently, as interviewing is a two-way street, our goal is to ensure our candidates have a more holistic and informed view of the potential fit in order for them to make the best decision. That said, it sounds as if this approach didn’t quite land that way for you, as it has for others. Finally, regarding the transition into our technical “trivia” questions, perhaps we could have set expectations more appropriately. Again, thank you for letting us know what your experience was like. Our entire team shares the motivation to carefully find the right people to join us while being respectful of all candidates and we will incorporate your feedback accordingly. Regards, Josh Ashton Chief People Officer
