I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Toptal
Interview
1. Screening call
2. Automated code test (codility)
3. Timed algorithm coding tests while observed via screen share
I don't know how many coding tests were supposed to be in step 3, because the interviewer just cut the call as soon as I failed to complete one. Rude.
Difficulty - as per algorithm lottery. If you won the lottery (or bought all the tickets), easy. On the other hand, even if you're actually clever enough to develop one of these algorithms from scratch and with no prior knowledge, Toptal doesn't want you. You'll run out of time.
Kind of happy with the outcome. I have seen no evidence that this kind of process selects for good developers, and I can see how it would select against many kinds of extremely valuable skills. No doubt Toptal is full of great people, but I'd prefer to work somewhere more well-rounded.

1 HR, 2 leet code, 1 project, 1 project defence
If you fail one of the leet codes you have a chance to re-apply again after a year. It wasn't bad, but its going downhill now. 2022 there weare about 300+ job offerings for my role, now less than 60
