      Economics Writer Interview

      May 2, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Belgrade, Central Serbia
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Thomson Reuters (Belgrade, Central Serbia) in Aug 2017

      Interview

Before the conversation, I was given three sheets of paper filled with problems, from simple mathematical to more economy and company management, privatization-related. One of the problems was, sort of, if the general manager earns XYZ dollars and the hygienist earns ABC, while the drivers earn LMN each and the board members QWE, please state what is the average, and what is the median wage in the company. Or, if the yearly inflation is X, and the GDP of the country in the same year is Y. can we expect further devaluation of the country's currency, stability, or strengthening of the local banknote?

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I was asked to name the story I would like to cover. As I learned about the job opening from the colleague, that is the boss/bureau chief who was among the people who interviewed me, I presumed (never presume!!!! that I learned) that they were hiring a political writer. Turns out I am quite useless in calculus without a calculator, and I found all the maths problems overwhelming, especially since multiplication and division are my weak sides. So the bureau chief comes at one point, I was just half way through, and he takes the papers from me, saying I have had enough time. The following interview went well, but I messed up the test bit, so I got no offer.
